DECEMBER 1 1TH, 1945 a monthly digest of news from the UfUdtoC aero-engine division j THE BRISTOL TORQUE METER Available on all current sleeve valve engines as an optional fitting, the reduction gear torquemeter enables the pilot or flight engineer to calculate engine horse power under all flight conditions, with an accuracy limited only by the R.P.M. indicator and the special pressure gauge. The function of the assembly is to provide an accurate indication of the torque on the stationary gear of the reduction gear assembly, and in the cut- Tbe "Bristol" Torquemeter away drawing, it will be seen that the stationary gear is retained in position by pistons (two in Hercules, three in Centaurus) operating in cylinders cast in the gear case. Engine oil is supplied to these cylinders by a high pressure oil pump, and bleed holes, which are covered or exposed by the piston movement, main- tain a substantially constant oil volume in the cylinders, while causing the pressure to vary according to the load on the pistons, thus to the engine torque. In other words oil pressure in the cylinders is arranged so that it automatically balances the torque reaction on the stationary bevel gear. An oil gauge in the cockpit records this oil pressure, and power is calculated by the following formula:- (Ib./sq.in.) x R.P.M, where k — 1017 for Hercules •t 642 for Centaurus with .44 reduction gear Mj^^^^^^ 770 for Centaur us with .40 reduction gear•i ' The unit needs no maintenance, due to the method of construction and to the fact that all parts are conservatively loaded and amply lubricated. Addition- ally, wear during service is so small that accuracy remains unaltered throughout the life of the engine.
