•22O FLIGHT FEBRUARY igTH, 1948 Service Aviation *—~ r Spaight went to Air Ministry, servingfirst in the Directorate of Staff Duties and later in the Directorate of Opera-tional Training, of which he later became deputy-director. From 1941 until earlyin 1942 he commanded the bomber station at Scampton, Lines, and after-wards spent more than two years with the Royal Air Force Delegation in Wash-ington, chiefly on training duties. Fencing T7ENCING in the R.A.F. is to be-T revived and brought up to pre-war standard. With this object, nnits arebeing encouraged to join the Royal Air Force Fencing Union. A Royal AirForce fencing championship was insti- tuted in 1920 and was held each year upto the outbreak of war in 1939, since when it has been in abeyance. An inter-Command team championship was in- augurated in 1945. Last year and in1946 an R.A.F. fencing team was entered for the Britannia Shield Competition. Commandant of C.F.E. AIR COMMODORE D. F. VV.ATCHERLEY, C.B.E., D.S.O., D.F.C., who has been Director of AirSupport and Transport Operations at the Air Ministry since October, 1946. willtake up a new post on March 1st as Com- mandant of the Central Fighter Estab-lishment. The C.F.E. is exclusively concernedwith the problems of fighter tactics. It serves R.A.F. commands overseas as wellas Fighter Command and visits are paid by the establishment's Tactics Branchto units at home and abroad to study their problems and to create a uniformtactical doctrine. . v . :i A.V-M. Cadets as Pilots A HUNDRED AND THIRTY-THREEproficient A.T.C. cadets who regis- tered last December have a chance ofbeing selected for training as pilots during their National Service with theR.A.F. They will be invited to apply for this training when called up for theirpreliminary medical examination and their pilot testing should take place atR.A.F. North Weald during April. Those who qualify will be the first chosen undexthis new scheme, and they will be among the first men not on regular engagementsto be trained as pilots.
