FLIGHT JANUARY 2OTH, 1949 Service Aviation and Mersing areas, travelling some 1,500miles over little-known jungle tracks. The airmen supported themselves fordays on end, sometimes assisted by sup- plies dropped from the air. Frequentlytheir only contact with the outside world was by radio. With the Squadron was asection of specially trained jungle trackers to lead the chase after banditsin all deep penetrations of the jungle. Among the highlights of the campaignwere the overtaking, after a 12-mile pur- suit, of bandits who had ransacked a sawmill at Kota Tinggi, and the recovery of all the looted stores, and operation" Swansong "—a six-day search, aided by air reconnaissance, of an area of thickjungle between Kota Tinggi and the coast. In a farewell message to theSquadron on leaving his command. Brigadier JR. C. O. Hedley, Commander,-Johore Sub-District, said: "No. 91 Squadron has done an extremely difficultjob' excellently, often under the most trying conditions. I am proud to havehad your Squadron serving under me, and shall look forward to the time whenyou may do so again." A Request from Sweden DURING the war some hundreds ofallied airmen, mostly belonging to the R.A.F. or the Dominions Air Forces, who came down on Swedish territory or in Swedish waters, were interned inFalun and the surrounding district. They were allowed to move freely in the townand many friendships were formed between them and the inhabitants. Theeditor of the Dala-Detnokraten, the daily newspaper published in Falun, statesthat many of the townspeople would be glad to renew these friendships and toknow how the ex-Falun airmen have fared since their release from internment. The newspaper would welcome news of them for publication. Among those fromwhom the editor hopes to hear are mem- bers of the R.C.A.F. who were internedin Falun, some of whom took part in the ice-hockey matches there. Swedish regard for the R.A.F. waswarmly demonstrated last May, on the occasion of No. 65 Squadron's good-willvisit.
