FLIGHT MARCH 3RD, 1949 NEW SMITHS INSTRUMENTS Smiths Maximum Safe Airspeed Indicator Combining the functions of airspeed indicator and mach- meter in a single dial, this new Smiths instrument saves panel space in high speed aircraft and lightens the task of the pilot. Two concentric pointers and a pre-set mach number indicator give quick and unmistakable readings. The first pointer shows airspeed; the second (with arrow head), coupled to an altimeter movement, indicates maxi- mum permissible speed at any height, according to the aircraft's pre-set mach number. As long as the first hand never passes the second, the critical mach number cannot be exceeded. Initial calibration is 'opened' to facilitate approach and landing, and provision is made to limit the highest reading the maximum pointer can record. Normal ranges are: 50-750 m.p.h. 50-650 knots. 100-1,200 k.p.h. SMITHS AIRCRAFT INSTRUMENTS LIMITED The Aviation division of S. Smith & Son* 'England! Limited t R I C K L F W O O D LONDON N W 2 r.
