Flight, March yd, 1949 Advi. STARTING THE ALVIS LEONIDES The Alvis LEONIDES 500 h.p. power plant, specified for most British helicopters—in- cluding the Westland Sikorsky S.51, the Bristol 171, and the Fairy Gyrodyne—is started by a ROTAX C. 0251 starter motor. The motor torque is transmitted to an automatic engaging and dis-engaging jaw through a gear reduction and multiplate torque overload-limiting device. A handcrank permits turn- ing of the engine for checking pur- poses or hand-starting, a spring- loaded ratchet safeguarding the operator in the event of engine backfire. Rotax also supplies the generator for the Leonides. The Kotax range of starter motors covers all the requirements of the Aircraft Industry for both reciprocating and gas-turbine aero-engines.
