FLIGHT ACCEPTANCE TESTING OF AIRCRAFT HEAT EXCHANGERS Intermediate Tests of Matrix Blocks:— Before individual blocks, complete with tie bolts and soldered-on retaining strips, are passed to che assembly line for building into radiators, they are each submitted to what is known as a " Tagger " test. This traditional test consists essentially in fitting around the block a sheet-metal casing which is usually soft-soldered to the tube piates. An Air-under-Water test is then carried out, the pressure being on the outside of the tubes, any leaks being detected by air bubbles from th? tube mouths, which are left open. The great disadvantage with this method, apart from the labour involved, is that it is possible to affect sound joints adversely when using heat to strip off the sheet-metal casing. The LAWRENCE solution to this is a robust, air tight jig of the same shape as the block to be tested, in which a seal between the tube-plate and the pressure-containing jacket is effected by an inflatable rubber tube.
