FLIGHT JULY 28TH, 1949 Background to the Races at Elmdon — King's Cup, in which Miss Spooner's Moth gained third place. Redhill, represented by Charles Gardner, won the Trophy for three consecutive years—from 1935-37, an<3 the last winner was W. M. Morris (Midland Aero Club) in 1948. He flew an Auster J.i at 124 m.p.h. There have been only four previous contests for the Air League Challenge Cup. Competition began in 1927. There were eight starters and the winner was N. Jones, who, flying a Cherub-powered A.N.E.C. II ultra-light mono- plane, completed the 116-mile course at 73.5 m.p.h. The 1930 race was abandoned due to poor weather, and there was no contest in 1930. S. Cliff (Desoutter) won the 1932 race. ELMDON ARRANGEMENTS ON the preceding page are reproduced maps which showthe facilities of Elmdon Airport during the week-end's activities, and the geography of the 20-mile course. A summary of the regulations and entry conditions for eachrace appeared in Flight on May 2Gth. In view of the proximity of the contests some ol the main points are worthy of repeti-tion. The King's Cup and Kemsley Challenge Trophy contests will be held during the Saturday afternoon. In view of withdrawals from the S.B.A.C. Challenge Cup jetaircraft event, more interest will be focused on the R.Aux.A.F. inter-group race, to be held on the Sunday. The remainder of the races will take place on the afternoonof Bank Holiday Monday. They are: the Air League Chal- lenge Cup, the Grosvenor Challenge Trophy, the NortonGriffiths Challenge Trophy, the S.B.A.C. Challenge Cup, and the Siddeley Challenge Trophy.
