de Havtllamf Mosquito T.T.39. Electric C ' I VHE cleanest, and possibly the fastest,A. bombing aircraft in the world, the Canberra B.I is characterised by wing andtail surfaces of remarkably low aspect- ratio, a dihedral tailplane, and slimnacelles—little greater in length than the chord of the wing—for the two Rolls-Royce Avon turbojets. Few technical details of the Canberra may be divulged, but Farnborough visitors may amuse themselves by estimating the fuel andbomb load for which provision is made in the remarkably capacious fuselage. Thebroad bubble-canopy over the cockpit is unique among British aircraft.' No traceOf armament will be discerned. Britain9* Aircraft - Military Types Avro Unjoin TANDARD heavy bomber of the RoyalAir Force, and also supplied to the Argentine government, the Lincoln B.2 isa late development of the war-time Lancaster and, in certain respects, a pre-cursor of the Shackleton to be seen at Farnborough. Four Rolls-Royce Merlinengines are invariably fitted. Span, 120ft; length, 78ft 8y,in; wing area, 1,421sq ft; gross weight, 82,000 lb; max. speed, 295 m.p.h. Avr« Kharklefon DESIGNED specifically for recon-naissance and for shadowing andstriking at both under-water and surface vessels, the Shackleton G.R.I is intendedprimarily for operation at low and medium levels. Four Rolls-Royce Griffon enginesdrive-de Havilland six-blade contraprops. Examination at Farnborough will dis-close that the search position in the nose is very favourably located and that the fuse-lage is liberally supplied with observation windows. A tail-down undercarriage wasselected to obtain the maximum utilisa- tion of the space available in the nose foroperational equipment. Two 20 mm. cannon are mounted in remotely-con-trolled barbettes in the nose; a dorsal turret carries two similar guns and thereare twin 0.5in guns in the tail turret. Span, 120ft; length, 77ft 6in; height, 17ft flin. Blackburn Firebrand TPHE Firebrand T.F.Sa, with which cer-X tain units of British Naval Aviation are armed, is characterised by power-operated .ailerons; as frequently demon- strated, these confer a very high rate ofroll. Functioning, as a dive bomber or torpedo dropper, the Firebrand is equallyeffective, and the Bristol Hercules 9 engine gives a useful fighting performance.Especially interesting are the flaps, of modified Fowler type, each with a sub-sidiary split flap, or spoiler, in the trailing edge, to provide extra drag for deck land-ing. Hydraulically-operated dive brakes and wing-folding gear are standard. Span, 51ft 3V,in- length, 38ft llin; wing ares,381.5 sq ft; gross weight, 16,000 lb; max. speed, 860 m.p.h. at 18,000ft; armament, 4x20 mm. guns,1x1,860 lb torpedo, or 1x8,000 )b bomb or 16 X 60 1b R.P.S. Blackburn S.28/43 OF more recent design and higher per-formance than the Firebrand, and— unlike the earlier machine—designed fromthe outset for the duties of a Naval dive bomber-torpedo dropper, the S.28/43(unofficially known as Firecrest) is an extremely manoeuvrable single-seater.The cranked wing, of high speed laminar- flow section, incorporates a simple two- break power-folding system, and is pro-vided with dive-brakes on upper and lower surfaces. Span, 44ft ll%in; length, 30ft 3%in; wing area,361.5 sq ft; gross weight, 15,280 lb; max. speed, 370 m.p.h. at 18,000ft; best combat radius (with torpedo),400 miles. lloulton Paul Hnlliol IN conformity with British Air Ministryrequirements, the instructor and pupilin the Balliol military trainer are seated side by side. Two versions—the T.I, withA.S. Mamba turboprop, and the P. 108 prototype (Bristol Mercury)—have spacefor a third occupant, but the Merlin- engined T.2, as now in limited productionfor the Royal Air Force, is a two-seater. Provision is made for a two-stage amberblind-flying scheme, the windscreen niters normally being concealed behind theinstrument panel and, when required, raised by a pneumatic ram. The followingdata apply to the Balliol T.I with Mamba turboprop:— Span, 30ft 4in; length, 86ft 6in; wing area, 250sq ft; gross weight, 7,804 lb; max. speed, 307 m.p.h. at 20,000ft; climb to 15,000ft, 8.4 min; endurance,2H hr at 10,000ft at max. cont. cruising speed. Bristol Brigand ORIGINALLY developed as a torpedo-fighter, the Brigand is now servingwith the R.A.F. overseas as a long-range dive-bomber and ground-attack machine, under the designation Brigand B.I.
