FLIGHT. 12 January 1930 HERE and THERE Backs to the Engine '"PHE U.S. Air Force has recently been J- conducting tests to ascertain human resistance to decelerative forces. Facing rearward, six "guinea-pig" volunteers safely withstood forces of up to 35^ pro- duced by sudden reductions in the speed of a rocket-propelled sleigh travelling on ils. The vehicle is capable of slowing from 150 m.p.h. to 75 m.p.h. in i sec. Repair Works to Close T^HE aircraft repair depot of A. V. Roe J- and Co., Ltd., at Langar, near Not- tingham, is expected to close down within the next six months, owing to lack of contracts. Some 750 workers are at present employed at the depot, which was built as a wartime measure for the • maintenance of Service aircraft. • King's Commendation IN addition to the New Year Honourslisted in these pages last week, the King's Commendation for valuable ser- vice in the air was bestowed on nine- civilian personnel concerned in the Berlin Air Lift, as follows: — A.V-M. Lee. radio PRIDE AND JOY : Exceptional high-altitude performance and a top speed of nearly 600 m.p.h. are claimed by the U.S. Navy to render the McDonnell Banshee capable of effective interception of any bomber in service (the U.S. height record for jet aircraft, 52,000ft, was established by a Banshee). Martin company has completed its programme of divest- ing itself of all interests not directly connected with the manufacture of aircraft, special weapons and closely related pro- ducts. The chemicals division, whose principal product is a vinyl plastic known as Marvinol, has been purchased by the United States Rubber Company. PEDAL EXTREMITY : Piloted by its inventor, Mr. Charles Paul, this odd aircraft was de- monstrated recently in America. Pedal-driven rotors provide vertical control over the 24ft- diameter balloon, but untethered flight in a breeze might prove directionally difficult. On Both Counts IN connection with the list of inter-national air records published last week it should be noted that the British national record for the London-Paris flight, held by S/L. T. S. Wade in the Hawker P.1052, is also an international point-to-point record. Improving the Espadon TTHE third prototype of the SNCASO -*• Espadon jet fighter has provision for the installation of a liquid-fuel rocket in addition to the fuselage-installed Nene. Meanwhile, the second prototype Espadon has been successfully flown fol- lowing a major modification. The ven- tral intake for the Nene has been replaced by a flush fuselage duct, and performance is said to have been im- proved.
