Some time ago Flightannounced that production of the new trainer, at Hatfield, was well ahead andthat the R.A.F. had taken delivery of several machines. Within a few weeks of takingcommand he was awarded the D.F.C. for his skill in intercepting enemy aircraftover this country at night. He destroyed one on his first patrol and soon after-wards he destroyed three more and was awarded a bar to the D.F.C. Later inthe same year he went to 11 Group H.Q. as an air staff officer for nigljt operationduties. A.V-M. Pike, who is 43, was commissioned from Cranwell in 1925. Until recently he was Deputy Director-General of R.A.F. Medical Ser-vices. It is also announced that G/C. B. C.Yarde. C.B.E., who commanded K.A.F. Station Gatow, Berlin, from July, 1947,until November, 1949, has been appointed Deputy Director of Personal Services (3)at the Air Ministry. This Branch is con- cerned with conditions of service as theyaffect the interests of airmen as indi- viduals. During G/C. Yarde's term as StationCommander, Gatow grew from a quiet airfield dealing with only a few passengeraircraft each day to the busiest airport in the world (at the height of the Berlin AirLift it frequently handled more than 900 aircraft movements a day). His serviceswere recognized by the award of the C.B.E. in the 1949 New Year HonoursList. His predecessor as D.D.P.S (3). G/C. R. T. Gething, O.B.E., A.F.C., hasbeen appointed Group Captain in charge of operations and training at Head-quarters, Far East Air Force, Singapore. New "P.C." Regulations -R ULES governing the selectionof serving R.A.F. personnel for permanent commissions lay down thatcandidates, other than direct entry uni- versity graduates and cadets, will nowbe recommended once yearly. Officers will be recommended beforeApril 30th, and lists of those selected will be published early in October each year.Aircrew and regular airmen may be re- commended at any time. Both officersand airmen who are university graduates serving on National Service engagementsmay apply for permanent commissions without waiting to be recommended, asin the case of direct entrants to perman.- ent commissions from the universities.The normal upper age limit of 30 for officers, aircrew and airmen and thelower age limit of 25 for aircrew and air- men will not necessarily be appliedrigidly for the time being. W.R.N.S. Re-organization FOLLOWING satisfactory reports onthe work and capacity of W.R.N.S. aircraft mechanics, it has been decidedthat in future they will receive the same training and, so far as physical limita-tions permit, undertake the same duties in Naval air Stations as men in themechanic (A) and (B) categories of the Naval Airman Branch. Thev will be classified as air mechanics
