176 FLIGHT, 2 February 1950 SERVICE AVIATION . . . three rounds, to qualify for which thecadets had fought through unit, wing, group and inter-group contests, andNorthern and Southern Area Finals. Events started with a close bout atmidget weight (7 stone) for the cup pre- sented by Flight. Cdt. R. Higgins, theSouthern champion, narrowly defeated Cdt. Monahan, Northern champion, onpoints. The outstanding bout of the evening was between the two Davises, B.Davis of 261 (Guildford) Sqn., and \Y\ E. Davis of 1000 (Bedlington) Sqn.They both fought with tremendous deter- mination, and both went down duringthe first two rounds but came back with remarkable aggression. The fight wasstopped at the last minute in favour of the Southern champion, B. Davis, al-though his opponent, by sheer guts, was for the third time staggering to his feet.Tremendous applause indicated every- one's approval of the award of the RoyLimbert Cup to W. E. Davis for the best loser of the championships. Two other outstanding bouts were theJunior featherweight, between Cdt. P. Harrington, 261 (Guildford) Sqn. and acoloured cadet, Cdt. Bangbala, 287 (Belle Vue) Sqn. (the latter, a gallant loseron points, was exceptionally fast and had a beautiful physique) and the senior fly-weight between Cdts. D. Flack and F. Wills. Cdt. Flack, 1948 Flight cup win-ner, looks a most promising young fighter and, aways on the offensive, did well togain a near but clear decision The A. J. Elvin cup for the best per-formance in the Championships was clearly earned by (junior, lightweight)'Cdt B. Blackburn, 1701- (Johnstone) Sqn., Scotland, although others whosenames must have received careful con- sideration were Cdts. P. Smith, E.O'Brien and J. Shannon. The lesson to be learned from the even-ing, especially from the junior bouts, was ihat the man who had learned to keepplugging and building up points with a straight left was at least half-way to-wards victory. A. F. Tinsley, writing in the souvenirprogramme on the subject of boxing in the R.A.F. says that whether the cadets Bout 7st midget 7st 71b mosquito 8st flywt. 8st7lbbarttamwt. ... 9st featherwt. 9st 71b lightwt. lOst welterwt. lOst 71b middle- wt 11st heavywt Name ofWinner* Cdt. What does mat-ter to the R.A.F. is that a spirit and character moulded in the ring and "gym-nasium early in their lives will remain with them throughout their Servicecareers. He also quotes Col. R.
