390 FLIGHT, 23 March 1950 SERVICE AVIATION • • • Sanders, whose husband, Air Marshal SirArthur Sanders, then commanded B.A.F.O., and the organization in Ger-many was subsequently taken over by Mrs. Williams, wife of Air Marshal T. M.Williams, the present Commander-in- Chief. A London committee was formedby Lady Tedder, wife of the former Chief of the Air Staff. Trouble for Terrorists AVRO Lincoln bombers of No. 57Squadron, hitherto based at Wad- dington, Lines, left on March 15th for Singapore, to intensify the air assault on the bandits in Malaya. They were to fly in stages of about 2,000 miles a day. Ground crews were lifted separately in Yorks and Hastings. It is understood that No. 57 Squadron will be stationed in Malaya indefinitely. Memorial Prize Revived TTHE Hyde-Thomson Memorial Prize,-*- suspended on account of the war in 1939, is to be reintroduced under revisedconditions. The Prize was founded in 1918 by Mr. R. H. Hyde-Thomson in"memory of his son, the late Lt.-Col. Douglas Hyde-Thomson, for the promo-tion of R.A.F. proficiency in wireless telegraphy and kindred subjects. The net annual income of the fund, atpresent about ^72, will be used to pro- vide cash awards for aircraft apprenticesof No. 1 Radio School, Cranwell. Half the income will be equally divided to pro-vide a cash award at each passing-out from the school to the aircraft apprenticewho passes out with the highest marks in radio subjects and is accepted for aGeneral Duties cadetship at the R.A.F. College. The other half will be awarded•each year to the aircraft apprentice who passes out from the school with the high-est marks in radio subjects in that year and who is accepted for a course at auniversity as a Technical Branch cadet. The awards will be made by the AirCouncil in consultation with the Officer Commanding No. 1 Radio School. No. 2600 SQUADRON, R. AUX. A.F. REGT., recently received the Hiwker Siddeley wUfi&eney Cup for unit competition, donated by Sir Frank Spencer Spriggs, managing director of the Hawker Siddeley Group. S/L. M.N. READ,D.F.C., Royal Australian Air Force, has been appointed Officer CommandingNo. 24 (Commonwealth) Squadron, Transport Command, in succession toW/C. P. A. Lombard, D.F.C., R.A.F., who is about to take up a staff appoint-ment at Air Headquarters, Hong Kong. No. 24 Squadron, equipped with Yorksand Dakotas and based at Oakington, Cambridge, is engaged on special flightsand the carriage of V.I.P.s. A fighter unit in the first world war,the Squadron was reformed in February, 1920, for communications duties. It wasthus the first permanent transport squad- ron in the R.A.F., and has now com-pleted 30 unbroken years in this capa- city. During the early years its aircraftwere current operational types of open- cockpit biplanes, with guns and otherequipment removed from the rear seats. During the 1939-45 war, one of theSquadron's notable achievements was the completion of more than 300 shuttleflights, in unarmed Hudsons, carrying "vital supplies to the beleaguered islandof Malta. The King and Queen have flown with 24 Squadron, and PrincessElizabeth made her first flight in one of its Dakotas. In 1947 the unit was reorganized toinclude representation from the Aus- tralian, New Zealand and South AfricanAir Forces, the Dominion aircrews serving with the R.A.F. on an exchangebasis. The post of squadron commander is filled by each of these Dominions AirForces and the R.A.F. in turn. The new CO. joined the R.A.A.F. in 1937. Hornchurch History '"FHE Station Commander, R.A.F., J- Hornchurch, G/C. F. C. Sturgis, O.B.E., is anxious that a history of this very old station be compiled. F/O. B. R. Golfing Society for the Keith Davies cup was held at the Royal Wimbledon course. The R.A.F. won by 9| to 2J.
