FLIGHT. 1.3 April 1950 "Ark Royal" . ^, * OFFICERS and men who served in thecarrier Ark Royal, sunk off Gibraltar in 1941, are invited to attend the launch- ing of a new carrier of the same name. Her Majesty The Queen is to launch the new Ark Royal at Birkenhead on May 3rd. Those wishing to attend arc asked to write—by April 15th—to the Ad- miralty (Naval Branch 456), Queen Anne's Mansions, London, S.W.i, giving their full names and the period in which they served in the Ark Royal. Boyd Trophy Presented AT Abbotsinch on Sunday, April 2nd,No. 1830 R.N.V.R. Air Squadron, commanded by Lt. Cdr. J. D. Murricane, D.S.C., were presented with the Boyd Trophy, a silver model of a Swordfish given by the Fairey Aviation Company, and awarded annually for the finest feat in Naval Aviation. No. 1830 Squadron —the first R.N.V.R. Air Squadron to have been formed after the wax—last year achieved the remarkable record of 2O<pfceck landings with only one minor mishap, despite the fact that many pilots had not landed-on since the war. The presentation was made by the Flag Officer Air (Home), Vice-Admiral Sir Reginald H. Portal, who congratula- ted the Squadron on its record, and re- called that its week-end flying over the past three years totalled 4,ooohr. No. 1830 Squadron is equipped with Fireflies, and this year will undergo annual train- ing in Malta. Local volunteers-—recruiting of whom will begin shortly—will be trainedin both technical and clerical trades. Observers' Summer Camp THE annual summer training camp ofthe Royal Observer Corps will be held this year between June 26th and July 29th at R.A.F. Station Wateibeach, Cambridgeshire. Last year's camp, attended by more than 2,000 observers, was held in August and September at Thorney Island. All areas still n^edmore volunteers. The lower age limit for new volunteers is 16, and the upper agelimits are 45 for service at centres, 55 for service at posts. R.A.F. in \. Ireland Reorganized THE Royal Air Force in Northern Ire-land is being reorganized. A new group, known as No. 67 (Northern Ire-land Reserve) Group, has been formed in Reserve Command, with headquarters atthe Edenmore Hotel, White Abbey, Bel- fast. This group will administerR.A.F.V.R., Auxiliary, A.T.C. and Com- bined Cadet Force units in NorthernIreland. Operational and administrative controlof regular R.A.F. units in Northern Ire- land will be vested in an existing CoastalCommand Group. No. 67 Group is com- manded at present by A. Cdxe. B. V.Reynolds, C.B.E., who has been Air Officer Commanding, Northern Ireland,since October, 1948. Under the new arrangement the commander of the groupwill also be designated Senior Air Force Officer in Northern Ireland. Reserve units in Northern Ireland in-clude No. 502 Fighter Squadron; No. 2502 L.A.A. Squadron; No. 3502 FighterControl Unit; and an Air Traffic Control I *nit (all Royal Auxiliary Air Force];Queen's University Air Squadron, and No. 59 Recruiting Centre, Belfast.
