; PLIGHT. 20 April 1950 IP- V 509 ALL-AUSTRALIAN : Avro Lincolns of the R.A.A.F. in open formation over Perth, the capital of Western Australia. Not only the aircraft (Mk. 30s) but their Rolls-Royce Merlin 102 power-plants are Australian built. A Lincoln of the R.A.A.F. last week took off for a six-month tour of duty in England, during which time it will be demonstrated at the forthcoming R.A.F. Display. SERVICE AVIATION International Squadron THE Brussels Treaty Organization liasset up the first completely integrated international defence unit to be formed in peacetime. It takes the form of an Examining Squadron, which will stan- dardize the flying training, and improve the efficiency, of the Western Union Air Forces. The formation of this important new unit is referred to in a leading article on page 481. Some time ago a number of Continen- tal instructors were attached to the R.A.F. Examining Wing, and sufficient of them are now available to man a self- contained Western Union unit. Its members will visit French, Dutch, Bel- gian and R.A.F. formations, making identical tests and checks to find a com- mon level of proficiency and lay down a common doctrine in all flying tech- niques. Instructors will IK expected to do one tour of at least two years with the Examining Squadrons. The Squadron itself will be based lor a year in each of the Western Union countries in turn. Its commanding officer will be supplied by the country in which it is based. (Dur- ing it.s first year, to be spent in the United Kingdom, S/L. P. M. Dobree- Hell will command the Squadron.) Much progress, it is stated, has already jx-en made in the co-ordination of train- ing of aircrews, and common rules have been adopted for operational procedures, recognition and routeing of aircraft, to ensure that any Allied aircraft can fly over Allied countries without being en- gaged by mistake. Harmonized opera- tional procedure has reached the stage where A.A. guns of any one country can work under the control of an A.A. operations room of another. Rcyal Air Force and Naval Aviation News and Announcements Exercise "Activity" ; ^ HTHIS year, as in 1949, the partners of •*- the Western Union will hold com- bined Naval exercises. Plans for Activity are being formu- lated by the staff of the Royal Nether- lands Navy in co-operation with British and French naval and air force officers.
