Sympathetic Audience MEMBERS of the staff of Blackburnand General Aircraft, Ltd., pro- vided a marine-conscious audience forMr. H. Knowler, director and chief de- signer of Saunders-Roe, when he lec-tured recently before the Brough branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society ondesign problems of flying boats. Mr. Knowler expounded the case for flyingboats versus landplanes, and cited figures to prove that size was an advantage andnot a limitation in this class of aircraft. Air League Cup Race FOR this year's Air League Race, tobe held at Sherburn-in-Elmet, near Leeds, on Saturday, July 22nd (theS.B.A.C. Challenge Cup Race will also take place on this occasion) an alterationhas been made to Regulation No. 2. This now reads: "Aircraft.—The Race isopen to any type of piston-engined air- craft of any nationality, entered by anyindividual, organization, firm or com- pany, provided that the maximum speedat sea level exceeds 150 m.p.h." Another Airship? IF enough support is forthcoming anairship club may be formed in Sussex, with headquarters at Shoreham Airport,by Mr. E. H. Wood, who was an air- ship pilot in the First World War. Mr.Wood hopes that the airship may be built and housed at Shoreham, and be-lieves that it would eventually be pos- sible to offer joy rides to visitors. An airship club, under the chairman-ship of Lord Ventry, has already been formed at Bournemouth and is buildingthe first dirigible seen in Britain for 20 years. It will be completed before theend of the year; speed will be approxi- mately 50 m.p.h., range 500 miles andcapacity 45,000 cu ft. NATIONALIST : A North American Mustang of the Chinese Nationalist Air Force starts up for a low-flying attack on Communist-held Shanghai, 70 miles distant from its base on Chusan Island. The Mustang—one of the finest fighting aircraft of World War II —continues in the service of many nations, including France, Australia, and Sweden. - NEWS IN BRIEF CANADAIR, LTD., announce theappointment of Mr. B. D. Russel as assistant sales manager and of Mr. Erik Nelson as a sales representative. Mr. Mr. B. D. Russel. Mr. Erik Nelson. Russel, while in the R.C.A.F., served with the famous No. 1 squadron and was awarded the D.S.O and D.F.C. and Bar. Mr. Nelson joins Canadair from B.O.A.C., where he. was operations director for the Atlantic Region; previously he had held a number of senior posts with B.O.A.C. and during the war had a responsible share in the operation of Atlantic services, both as a serving R.A.F. officer and in civil posts. * * * The date of the fifth annual rally of the St. Albans Model Aero Club is Sunday, July 23rd, and not May 17th as inadvertently quoted last week. The venue is the Handley Page airfield at Kadlett. • * • Special-purpose industrial adhesives, principally compounds, based on rubber and latex, are the subject of a new- catalogue, Adhesives and Compositions, issued by Dunlop Special Products, Ltd., Fort Dunlop, Birmingham, 24, from whom executives may obtain copies. • • * Dr. H. Roxbee Cox, who is now Chief Scientist, Ministry of Fuel and Power, is to give the 1950 May lecture to the Institute of Metals at the Royal Institu- tion, Albemarle Street, London, W.r, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10th. His subject will be "Industrial Gas Tur- bines." Admission is without ticket., and visitors will be welcome. » * • The new president of the Aluminium Development Association is Mr. Edward Player, managing director of Birmid Industries, Ltd., joint managing director of Birmingham Aluminium Casting (1903) Co., Ltd., chairman and joint managing director of Birmetals, Ltd., managing director of Sterling Metals, Ltd., and chairman of Perry Barr Metal Co., Ltd. Mr. E. Austyn Reynolds, of T.I. Aluminium, Ltd., has been elected A.D.A. vice-president and Mr. F. G.
