THE WILBUR WRIGHT LECTURE THIS evening, May 25th, the 38th Wilbur Wright MemorialLecture is to be delivered before the Royal Aeronautical Society at 6 p.m. in the lecture theatre of the Royal Institution, 21, Albemarle Street, London, W.i. The speaker is Sir Richard Fairey, M.B.E., Hon. F.R.Ae.S., who has chosen as his subject Some Aspects of Expenditure in Aviation—a modest title under which he has prepared a remark- able review of a formidably large and intangible subject: it is, in effect, an analysis of the human effort put into world aviation, both military and civil, since the days of the Wright Brothers, and Sir Richard has taken the dollar—as the least unstable yardstick by which such effort can be measured—as his standard of comparison MAJOR T. M. BARLOW MANY of his friends in the Industry and the Services willlearn with sorrow of the death, at his home at Itchenor, of Major Thomas Morgan Barlow, after a long period of illness. Maj. Barlow has been, for the past five vears, ^jecial technical consultant to the Fairey Aviation \ * % ~* >*** * ' Co., Ltd., from which he retired - * •< as a director in 1945. He was educated at Wrekin College and Birmingham University, and apprenticed to Siemens Dynamo Works, Stafford. He held a special engineering appointment in the Home Office, until, in 1915, he joined the R.N.A.S. At the end of that war he became Chief Technical Officer at Martle- sham, whence he went to Fairey's in 1924, becoming a director in 1928. In 1935 he was the prime mover in the opening stages (and well into the war) of the firm's works at Heaton Chapel, Stock- I>ort. This formidable task, begun in the press of pre-war expansion, was admirably carried out, and the weigr was accentuated by responsibility for the adjacent Errwood Park works, where Fairey's built Halifax and Beaufighter air- craft under a management arrangement. Major Barlow, who was vice-president of the Royal Aero- nautical Society in 1936-7, will be long remembered by his friends, in the Society and elsewhere, for his good company and cheerful temperament. •,>••*" R.Ae.S. ADASTRAL DRAMATICS Scala Theatre, recently, when the Adastral Players ventured to present the play And No Birds Sing, an audi- ence comprising members of the Air Ministry and Ministry of Civil Aviation and their friends were warmly appreciative of the performers' efforts. Although the pace was a trifle leisurely at times, the producer developed his characters well, and all concerned are to be congratulated on a good show. The orchestra of the R.A.F. Central band, under W/C. A. E. Sims, added to the evening's entertainment. FORTHCOMING EVENTS Ma> 25.
