640 \ \\ FUGHT. 35 May 1950 GARDEN-PA (1) Gay and confident in the wicker basket of the Parisian aerostat (capacity 24,000 cu ft of hydrogen), M. Charles Dollfus (cap), Mrs. Pritchard (plumage), Mr. Peter Masefield (balaclava), and Mr. Charles Brown (spurning top cover) take leave of the R.Ae.S. Garden Party at White Waltham. The event was described in Flight last week. (2) Ranald Porteous, in the Auster with Goodyear castering undercarriage. (3) Sir John Buchanan, retiring President of the R.Ae.S. (right), and S/L. Maurice Wright of Fairey Aviation. (4) Wooded Berkshire, slipping below the oscillating balloon basket, is registered by Charles Brown's camera. Ballast is streaming down and the dangling trail-rope is seen. • (5) Manual assistance is needed to protect the graceful wings of the Fouga Cyclone from impact with rough ground. Over 2401b of jet thrust is supplied for this appealing and very manoeuvrable little machine by a Turbomeca Pimene.
