FLIGHT, 15 June 1950 719 THE KING'S CUP RACE : : . May nth. The turning-points at Abbott's Bromley and Meirare at ex-R.A.F. airfields and it is understood that Stoke Corporation is likely to arrange for the public to be admittedto Meir. The Race—this year, thanks to the longer course, no heatswill be flown—will start at 2.30 p.m., and will be preceded by a brief flying display beginning at 1.45; gates open at noon. Visiting aircraft must land before 1.30 p.m., and will notbe allowed to leave before about 5.45 p.m. No landing fees will be charged and air visitors will automatically gain club-enclosure admission. Civil V.H.F. traffic control will be carried out on 118.1 mc/s. Motorists should arrange for an early arrival. Entry to themembers' enclosure will be the main gate in Wobaston Lane and travellers by road are particularly requested to use theircar labels, otherwise the police will divert them to the public entrance. Visitors from London are advised to follow A5 as far at Gailey Cross-roads, turn left at this point and right atthe first island at Fordhouses; the airport is approximately three-quarters of a mile from the latter point. The club enclosure will be restricted to members of theWolverhampton Aero Club and their guests, and to members of "the Royal Aero Club; the latter can obtain tickets at 5s,which includes free car parking, from the R.Ae.C. Tickets for the club enclosure are necessary only for R.Ae.C. members.There will be a public enclosure for which the admission fee will be 3s 6d for adults and 2s for children. (Cars 5s each,buses 30s each.) There will be fully licensed bars in both the club and public enclosures, and luncheon and teas will beseived in the club enclosure. For the Goodyear Trophy Race on Sunday, there are 22entries; the contest is divided into two heats, the first of which starts at 2 p.m.; the second heat is at approximately2.50 p.m., and the final at approximately 4.30 p.m. There is no admission charge either for the public or for members, andcatering and other facilities will be available as on the previous day. THE BIRTHDAY HONOURS A Barony for Rolls-Royce Mang.ging Director PARTICULARLY well - knownmembers of the aircraft industryfigure in the Birthday Honours List, some details of which, in so far as aviation is concerned, appear below. Mr. E. W. Hives, C. H., M.B.E.,F.R.Ae.S., managing director of Rolls- Royce, Ltd., becomes a baron, and hisfriends in the industry will agree that the honour is well deserved, particularly inview of his immensely valuable work immediately before and during the war,when, as general works manager of the Derby firm, he was responsible for theproduction of the Merlin and subsequent Rolls-Royce engines which played such avital part in air victory. Latterly, of course, he has been equally concernedwith the success of Rolls-Royce turbojets. Now 64 years of age, he joined the or-ganization as far back as 1908. Equally worthy of congratulation isMr. F. T. Hearle, F.R.Ae.S., M.I.P.E., of de Havillands, who receives theC.B.E. Again the j'ear 1908 must be mentioned, for it was then, also, thatMr. Hearle became associated with Sir Geoffrey (then Capt.) de Havilland. Inthe 1914-18 war he was manager of the experimental department; later he wasmanaging director of the D.H. enterprise through the years of its greatest growth,retiring in 1944 for reasons of health; he remains a director, however. Two other names well-known in theIndustry are those of Mr. H. P. Folland and Mr. J. Martin, both of whom receivethe O.B.E. Mr. H. P. Folland, M.B.E., F.R.Ae.S., F.I.Ae.S., F.R.S.A., who iscited in the list as "lately chairman of the Southampton Committee, SouthRegional Board for Industry," is, of course, managing director of the com-pany bearing his name, while Mr. J. Martin occupies a similar position in theMartin-Baker Aircraft Co., Ltd., of ejector-seat fame. The services of Capt. J. L.
