PARISIAN AIR DISPLAY Pictorial Postscript to Last Week's Report of the French National Air Fete, Held Recently at Orly frfSusn with " Flight " Photographs VAST as K"~wls, Inecrowd which inundated OrlyAirport, Paris, on June nth was almost equalledby hordes of gendarmes, officials and vendors of sun-glasses, refreshments and novelties; such at least was an English visitor's impression. Quite unequalled, how- ever, was the mutual enthusiasm of the citizens of Paris, and their pride in the city's major airport, gaily dressed with flags for the occasion. At Villacoublay airfield, some three weeks earlier, a lesser display had attracted such crowds that returning traffic took four hours to cover the congested distance back to Paris, a journey normally occupying 20 minutes. For the Orly display, extensive arrangements were made to prevent repetition of that unhappy ending. Transport facilities included 50 special trains and 300 buses, with parking space for 3,000 cars and 15,000 bicycles. Such prudence proved more than justified. Even though the estimated attendance of half a million seemed optimistic, little doubt remained that the crowd was probably the largest ever to witness a European air display. Mingling with this mighty audience, one gained further insight of France's very real air-mindedness.
