FLIGHT. 22 June 1950 749 SERVICE AVIATION Royal Air Force and Na val A via tion News and Announcements Sir John Slessor Promoted June 13th The London Gazetteannounced the promotion of Air Marshal Sir John Slessor, G.C.B.,D.S.O., M.C., to the rank of Marshal of the Royal Air Force. Sir John Slessorsucceeded Marshal of the R.A.F. Lord Tedder as Chief of the Air Staff on Janu-ary 1st; for two years previously he had served as Commandant of the ImperialDefence College. Born in 1897, he joined the R.F.C. in 1915 and received a per-manent commission in the R.A.F. five years later. 4,%inadian Naval-Air Cruise HE Royal Canadian Navy's aircraftcarrier Magnificent will sail from Halifax, Nova Scotia, in late August ona three-months' cruise to Europe. Lon- donderry, Northern Ireland, will bevisited in mid-September, and the car- rier's air groups will begin two weeks'intensive training at the R.A.F.-R.N. Joint Anti-Submarine Training School.On board the Magnificent will be 825 Squadron of the 18th Carrier AirGroup, flying Fireflies, and the Sea Furies of 803 and 883 Squadrons, 19thC.A.G. The Flag Officer will be Rear- Admiral E. R. Mainguy, O.B.E. R.A.F. Appointments T^HE Air Ministry announces that-«- A. Cdre. G. R. Beamish, C.B., C.B.E., has been appointed A.O.C., AirH.Q., Iraq, with the acting rank of Air Vice-Marshal. He will take up his dutiesearly in September, and his present appointment—as Commandant of theR.A.F. College, Cranwell—will be taken over by A. Cdre. L. F. Sinclair, G.C.,C.B., C.B.E., D.S.C., on July 31st. Since last December, A. Cdre. Sinclair DISPLAY PRACTICE : As the R.A.F. Display draws nearer, squadrons are hard at work rehearsing formation events. Chapman has been Senior Air Staff Officer of the samegroup. The Rev. P. J. O'Connell, it is stated, takes the relative rank of GroupCaptain on appointment as Principal Chaplain (R.C.) of the R.A.F. He suc-ceeds the Rev. J. Lavin, who is retiriag from the Service. Gunners' Summer Camps HTRAVELLING from their home bases-*• by air, rail and road, some 800 members of the 12 light A.A. squadronsof the R.Aux.A.F. Regiment are this year holding summer camp at R.A.F.Station Watchet in Somerset. The first unit to attend training was No. 2501(County of Gloucester) Squadron, which attended camp from June 3rd-i7th.Other squadrons will visit Watchet in rotation until September 30th.
