FLIGHT, 29 June 1950 773 SERVICE AVIATION Rcyal Air Force and Naval Aviation News and Announcements ON NEW MOUNTS: No. 600 (City ofLondon) Squadron, R.Aux.A.F., flying Meteor 4s (with which they were re-equipped twomonths ago) from summer camp at Thorney. All "600's " pilots have now converted totheir new aircraft and four have practised night flying. New CO. for No. 615 SPEAKING at the squadron's guestnight, held at Tangmere during summer camp, the present commandingofficer, S/L. Peter Devitt, announced with much regret that family affairswould necessitate his relinquishing com- mand of No. 615 Squadron at the endof this year. He would then be handing • X. over to S/L. Neville Duke, Hawker'swell-known test pilot. Sir Basil Embry, A.O.C.-in-C. FighterCommand, who was the guest of honour, thanked No. 615 for the work done inthe past year, the standard of which was higher than he had thought it possiblefor Auxiliaries to attain. To get the whole fighter force to the highest pitcho£ efficiency in the shortest possible time •was, he said, a matter of great urgency. No. 615 will lead the fighter fly-pastat the R.A.F. Display. At present they have Spitfires, but are due to receiveMeteor 4s soon. R.A.F.A. Conference UNDER the chairmanship of AirMarshal Sir Richard Peck, over 1,000 delegates and members attended the very successful annual conference ofthe Royal Air Forces Association, held at Scarborough on June 9th, 10th and nth.Over 30 resolutions were passed during the conference, affecting such matters aspensions, welfare, contributions to the R.A.F. Benevolent Fund, and Battle ofBritain Week. The Association's national council is to apply for the Grantof a Royal Charter to the R.A.F.A. Esher Trophy Presented "p'OR the fourth time in its history, No.-T 604 (County of Middlesex) Squad- ron, R.Aux.A.F., has won the EsherTrophy, which is presented annually to the Auxiliary squadron considered mostefficient in flying, maintenance, recruit- ing and discipline. The ceremony of pre-sentation took place in the garden of Buckingham Palace at noon on Wednes-day, June 21st, when S/L K. T. Lofts, D.F.C., the Commanding Officer of No.604 Squadron, received the Trophy—a bronze figure ~of Perseus—from HisMajesty the King. The last Squadron tc win the award, in 1938 was No. 603 PROUD MOMENT: S L. K. T. Lofts, D.F.C., the Commanding Officer of No. 604 Squadron, receives the Esher Trophy from His Majesty the King. Their Majesties are both closely connected with the, R.Aux.A.F.; theKing is Air Commodore-in-Chief, R.Aux.A.F., and the Queen is HonoraryAir Commodore of No. 600 (City of Lon- don) Squadron. In attendance on theirMajesties were Mr. Arthur Henderson and Lord Templewood, No. 604 Squad-ron's Honorary Air Commodore. The parade and presentation werewatched from the terrace of the Palace by Princess Margaret and relatives ofmembers of the Squadron. Addressing the parade, the King said: "We realizethat your efficiency has been won at the cost of absence from your homes andfamilies, and we are glad to acknow- ledge the sacrifices which they, as well asyou, have made to achieve it. In honour- ing you to-day we are paying tributealso to the whole of the R.Aux.A.F. R.A.F. Display Notes LAST week we published notes on someof the R.A.F. Display items, and in this issue (pages 768-769,1 we give somefurther general details. There follow notes on some individual "turns." * * * An original aerobatic event will begiven by two Balliol trainers, whose pilots will perform manoeuvres requestedby the public. Two roving microphones will be passed through the enclosures,and spectators will be able to ask the pilots to execute any manoeuvre. Requests and the pilots' acknowledgments will be heard over the loudspeakers. • * * Radio-telephone conversations will berelayed to the public enclosures during several other Display items—includingNo. 54 Squadron's formation aerobatics and the pupil-and-instructor act, to beperformed in Chipmunks. R.A.F. Regi- ment armoured cars, making a dummyattack on tanks, will be heard calling up air support. Two formations of Vam-pires will meet their request and attack with bombs and'rockets.
