(I) Inverted fly-past during F/L. R. Emett's indi- vidual aerobatic performance on the Gloster Meteor 4. (2) With streams of red, white and blue smoke trailing from their Vampire 5s. the 54 Squadron aerobatic team fly overhead in tight formation. (3) Pattern-flying by the CF.S. : 37 Harvard* in seven flights, line-astern. (4) Mos- quitoes are seen during their run-in for the attack on " Amiens prison "—the Display's most spec- tacular event. (5) Simulating Group Captain Packard's aircraft, one of the Mosquitoes makes a second run to assess damage inflicted on the smouldering target. (6) In the Royal enclosure : (left to right) Air Chief Marshal Sir Ralph Cochrane, Princess Margaret, Mr. Aidan Crawley ; between Their Majesties, Mr. Arthur Henderson ; Marshal of the R.A.F. Sir John Slessor, H.R.H. the Duchess of Kent and H.R.H. Prince Michael. (7) A most.striking study of the Hawker P.I08I, first of the Trew aircraft to take off. Trevor Wade, Hawker's chief test pilot, is at the controls. (8) W/C. Roland Beamont brings the Canberra prototype across the airfield at high speed and low altitude. (9) Another of the new types on show was the Gloster/Armstrong-Whitworth Meteor .N.F.I I, piloted by S/L J. Lancaster. With its new radar nose, the Meteor II has a sinister and purposeful appearance. (10) As a post-script to the Amiens-prison event, modern methods of air-support were illustrated immediately after the Mosquitoes' attack. A Hastings is shown dropping parachute-borne supplies to the " escap- ees." (It) High ground surrounding the airfield gave most of the spectators a good view of the flying ; from the spot illustrated much of the comprehensive static park could be seen. The Avro Shackleton is prominent among the parked aircraft shown. (12) The largest aircraft in the fly-past were B-29 Superfortresses of the United States Air Force, 26 of which are illustrated. All the Illustrations on these and the two following pages, with the exception of No. 6 opposite, an from4" Right" photographs. 12
