ADRIAN CRAWLEY, the Under-secretary of State for Air, officially opened the first of a new type of baiTackblock for W.R.A.F. personnel at Flying Training Command H.Q., Shinfield Park,Reading, on July 14th. A two-storey, " Z "-form building, the new block has78 single cubicles and additional accom- modation for six W.R.A.F. sergeants. Itis decorated throughout in pastel shades, and each single berth has its own built-inwardrobe with full-length mirror, wall- light and bedside lamp. R.N. Flying Club Meeting 'THE Royal Naval Flying Club held itsJ- "At Home" on Sunday, July gth, at R.N.A.S. Gosport. Admiral SirGeorge Creasey, president of the Club, was present, together with LadyCreasey, and Admiral Sir Reginald Portal, Lady Portal and Rear AdmiralEverett. Twenty-seven aircraft arrived and a number of competitions were held.Colonel J. Elwes, in a.Messenger from White Waltham, won the concoursd'elegance and Mr. L. E. A. Chester- Lawrence (Tiger Moth) received firstprize in the arrival competition. Three Seafires, representing Nos. 1831 and1833 R.N.V.R. Air Squadrons (based at Stretton and Bramcote), gave a shortdemonstration. R.A.F. Appointment WTH the acting rank of Air Com-modore, G/C. P. D. Cracroft, A.F.C., has been appointed Senior AirLiaison Officer of the United Kingdom Service Liaison Staff in South Africa.Until recently he commanded the joint Anti-Submarine School at Londonderry.Born in 1907, A.Cdre. Cracroft was commissioned in the R.A.F. in 1927.Much of his early service was with the Fleet Air Arm and he has been asso-ciated with maritime aviation during the greater part of his career. Following asuccession of wartime Coastal Command appointments he spent a period in theBahamas as Commander of No. 111 O.T.U. At the end of the war he wasposted to the Far East as S.A.S.O. at Air H.Q., South-East Asia. PROUD MOMENT for Officer Cadet D. Fish as he receives the Sword of Honour from A.V.-M. B. V. Benevolent Fund Council THE Royal Air Force Benevolent Fundannounces that the following have joined the Council of the Fund : Dame Katherine Trefusis Forbes, Lady Slessor, Gen. Sir Mosley Mayne, Air-Marshal Sir Hugh Walmsley, and Air-Marshal T. A. Warne-Browne. Military Air Pentathlon TWO R.A.F. teams will representGreat Britain in the InternationalMilitary Air Pentathlon at Arcachon, nrar Bordeaux, between July 22nd and31st. The captains will be S/L. G. A. Podevin, of Fighter Command, whowith F/L. L. S. Lumsdaine (Boscombe Down) will form the "A" team, andS/L. W. Allsopp, of "B" team, with F/L. E. A. Tippell (Hawarden). Thereserve will be F/L. G. O. Russell (Halton), and S/L. J. W. Souter(Swinderby) will be medical officer. Other countries also entering twoteams are Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and France. The Argentine,Egypt, Finland, Greece, Italy, Luxem- bourg, Norway, Sweden, Turkey and FAIREY'S LATEST : Compressed air is employed to drive the starter-motor of the Fairey I7's Armstrong-Siddeley Double Mamba power-unit. Main dimensions of this new anti-submarine aircraft are : span, 54ft. 4in. (folded, 19ft. 6in) ; length 43ft. the United States of America were alsoinvited. The teams must first enter the air rally, which entails flying from Paristo Arcachon over an indirect course with a number of pinpoints, to arrive atArcachon at a specified time. The route will be notified to the competitorsonly an hour before take-off. Having completed this test, teams arethen eligible to enter for the Pentathlon proper, consisting of rapid pistol-firing,swimming (including a 3-metre dive, picking up three objects at the bottom ofthe swimming bath at distances of 40 metres, 30 metres and 5 metres, andswimming back 50 metres free style, the whole event being arranged on a timebasis), basketball, fencing (five hits with the foil), and an escape course. Thislast event is a particularly arduous one, in which competitors, wearing 251bpacks, will first have to negotiate a difficult obstacle course before complet-ing a cross-country course of about 12km, including a river between 200 and300 metres wide which must be swum. The R.A.F. team (also consisting ofS/L. Podevin and F/L. Lumsdaine) won last year's competition, and in 1948 theR.A.F. came second. The teams for this year's competition will fly from Hendonon July 22nd in the aircraft in which they will compete in the air rally, the"A" team in a D.H. Devon and the "B" team in an Avro Anson. Battle of Britain Reunion A BATTLE OF BRITAIN reunion-^- dinner will be held at Fighter Com- mand Headquarters on Friday, Septem-ber 15th. Assembly will be at 7.30 p.m. for 8 p.m. and dress will be lounge suits.All serving and released flying person- nel who flew in fighter aircraft engagedin the Battle of Britain between July 10th, 1940, and October 31st, 1940, andwho are eligible to wear the clasp of the 1939/45 Star, are invited to apply fortickets to the Senior Personnel Staff Officer, H.Q., Fighter Command,R.A.F., Bentley Priory, Stanmore, Middlesex, not later than August 1st.Envelopes should be marked '' Battle of Britain Dinner." Accommodation willbe limited but everything will be done to accommodate as many as possible.
