FLIGHT, 24 August 10.50 WITH DETERMINED CHIN : A NEW SUBMARINE HUNTER Directly descended from the Sturgeon, already in quantity production for the Royal Navy, and deriving its power from two Armstrong Siddeiey Mambaturboprops, the new S.B.3 carrier-borne anti-submarine search and strike aircraft, seen on its first flight, is the latest product of Short Brothers and Harland, Ltd. That handsome is as handsome does should be borne in mind in considering its profile. UNIT-DRIVE AIR COMPRESSOR SPECIALISTS in the field of aircraft pneumatics, theHymatic Engineering Co., Ltd., Redditch, have recently co-operated with the English Electric Co., Ltd., in the develop- ment of an electrically driven compressor unit for use on jet aircraft where no direct mechanical drive from the gas-turbine installation is available. A considerable saving in weight has been effected by dis- pensing with the usual engine-driven gear box and by pro- viding instead a drive to a large electric generator capable of powering the aircraft auxiliary services. It is claimed that, despite the additional electric motors required, the weight reduction effected is,.appreciable. Actuated by this generator, the new unit, known as the Hymatic Type EMC 1, consists of an English Electric 0.9 h.p., 9,500 r.p.m., 24- volt motor, which drives a standard Hymatic com- pressor (450 lb/sq in, or, a 1 t e r n a - tively, 600 lb/sq in) through a reduction gear box with a ratio of 7.25 to 1. A cooling fan is ™™___ _, fitted at the other eud of the motor armature shaft. The 600 lb/sq in compressor delivers 1.25 cu ft of free air a minute. Lubrication for the compressor is of the dry sump type and is provided by a forced oil supply from pumps and tank housed in the reduction gear box. Current drawn by the unit ranges from 30 amp at zero pressure to 44 amp at 600 Ib/sq in. A further series of electrically driven units providing pres- sures of 1,000 Ib/sq in is now being developed and these will be available with an alternative A.C. motor operating on a 200 v 400 eye three-phase supply. , The n ;ompressor, type EMC-1. A TRUE PERSPECTIVE "Keep the Memory Green—The Story of Dunkirk," by Lt- Col. Ewan Butler and Major Selby Bradford, M.B.E., M.C. Hutchinson and Co., Ltd., London. Illustrated. Price 12s 6d.T HIS is a story of the events leading up to Dunkirk, and of the withdrawal itself, by two soldiers of the B.E.F. But it is like none of its predecessors, for, although the authors leave little doubt of the average soldier's picturesque views on the R.A.F. in those tragic days, they point out that, in fact, the crews of the all-too-few Hurricanes, Battles, Blen- heims and Lysanders were '' perhaps the bravest of all the men of the British Expeditionary Force." There are scores of tales of courage and devotion to duty by all three Services and by the civilian sailors who manned the fleet of little ships which contributed so much to the suc- cess of Operation Dynamo. They are written with a well- justified sense of pride, but without any illusions, for the authors quote Winston Churchill's words that, "We must be careful not to assign to this deliverence the attributes of a victory. Wars are not won by evacuations." Nevertheless, they add, "There was a victory inside this deliverance which should be noted; it was won by the Royal Air Force," which, with the French air arm, shot down more than 2,000 German aircraft in the Battle of France—more than were destroyed in the Battle of Britain that followed !
