Vickers-Armstrong's Viscount DURING its European demonstra-tion tour, its tropical trials at Khar- toum, and—most recently—a period ofactual airline service on B.E.A.'s London- Paris run, the prototype Viscount per-formed so well that no misgivings may be felt concerning the merits of turboproptravel, exemplified here by the Vickers- Rolls-Royce combination. The Viscountproduction version (see drawing on pages 282-28$) has more powerful Darts, and itsoverall "idimensions are slightly greater. Internal \rrangements differ according totiustoflier's requirements; B.E.A.'s Vis- count 701, for example, will carry 40passengers in the well-fitted, fully pressur- ized cabin. An alternative version has 53seats. Cruising at 25,000 ft at 316 m.p.h. the range is 950 miles (plus 230-milediversion and 45 min stand-off). Cabin quiet and lack of vibration are qualitieswhich require no further comment. Span, 94ft; gross weight, 50,0001b. Vickers-Armstrong V.C.3 FROM the well-tried Viking, the VickersV.C.3 design has been evolved for use on secondary routes. Carrying 27 passen-gers, the range is over 1,500 miles. Like the military Varsity crew-trainer, theV.C.3 has a nosewheel undercarriage. Span, 95ft 6in; gross weight, 37,0001b. Westland-Sikorsky S-51 OEVERAL civil applications have beenO found for this Leonides-powered heli- copter, in addition to its successful militaryadoption as the Dragonfly. Notable instances are the crop-spraying work ofPest Control Ltd., and B.E.A.'s pioneer passenger service between Cardiff andLiverpool.
