IN RETROSPECT yith Circuit Racing : The Prize-presentation ^-Photographs as it was, proved confusing to the average spectator unfamiliar with handicap air racing. How, of course, to explain the nice distinction between a leader on handicap and a " physical leader"—and to keep your unseen audience reminded of that distinction during a crowded couple of hours—is a problem that we ourselves are happy to leave to broadcasting experts. Other members of our staff flew from Hum to Lympne in Flight's Gemini G-AFLT immediately after the race, and were able to assess the attractions of the course from a pilot's view- point. The coastal route made navigation a simple task—con- fined mainly to passing the observation points at the right altitude and within the approved margin from the shore. Many pilots enjoyed the opportunity of a long spell of authorized low-flying —for some, perhaps, the only comparable experience since E.F.T.S. days. The large entry-list ensured many pleasant meetings and re- unions of competitors from all parts of the country ; at Lympne, where most of the pilots assembled after the race, experiences were still being recounted in the early hours of Sunday morning. Everybody, of course, whether pilot, passenger, official or journalist, had strictly individual and somewhat circumscribed impressions of the proceedings, for the set-up was in no way comparable with the average circuit-race, where several laps are made and all concerned are re-united within an hour or so to exchange opinions. f An impressive, occasion incidental to the race was the appear- ance of the Brabazon over Hum shortly before the start and its subsequent passage, via the South Coast towns, over Herne Bay.
