FLIGHT November 1950 The Quest for Range Jet-Bomber Studies At upper left, orbiting at low level, is the English Electric Canberra B.2 tactical bomber. Design features to note are the low-aspect-ratio wing, "finger" dive brakes, and the installation of the two Rolls-Royce Avon axial-flow turbojets. Large-capacity wing-tip fuel tanks have been developed for the Canberra, and one of these is illustrated at upper right. The view on the right is of a North American B-45C Tornado, of the type already well established in U.S.A.F. service. The tip tanks are seen to be finned in order to ensure clearance of the structure when they are jettisoned. Below, a Boeing B-47 Stratojet is seen getting away under the combined thrust of six General Electric J-47 turbojets and eighteen rockets. The immense power is required to lift the unspecified fuel and military load. A speed of over 600 m.p.h. is claimed for th« B-47, now in production for the U.S.A.F.
