THE cause of aviation owes much tothe keen, practical example shownby Prince Bernhard of the Nether- lands. Last week's warmly welcomed Statevisit by Queen Juliana and the Prince ended ct 11 a.m. last Friday when theRoyal couple left Northolt in a Dakota flown by the Prince himself. A FighterCommand escort of 18 Vampires from Odiham, led by W/C. A. G. Rawlinson,D.F.C., met the Dakota over London and conducted it out over the North Sea to a point 40 miles past Felixstowe. At Northolt, the R.A.F. was represented by Air Chief Marshal Sir Ralph Cochrane5 Air Marshal T. A. Waroe-Browne, and A.V.-M. D. F. Atcherley, with a guard of honour and R.A.F. Central Band. When the Queen and Prince arrived in Britain by sea on November 21st, an escort of 18 Meteors was to have been pro-vided, but the aircraft were grounded by bad weather. During the visit, on November 23rd, Prince Bernhard made a thoroughinspection of London Airport, where he was met on arrival by Lord Pakenham; Sir Miles Thomas; Sir John D'Albiac, theAirport Commandant; and A.Cdre. W. E. G. Mann, Director- General of Navigational Services, M.C.A.The Prince also met three British members of the staff of K.L.M., of whose controlling .board he is a member. He thenvisited the control tower, G.C.A. caravans and the London Radar operations room. Later the same day he visited the Brentfordfactory of the Sperry Gyroscope Company—the manufacturers of instruments in his personal Dakota. The Prince visitedanother airfield during his stay in Britain—Hendon, where he tested a Jaguar XK120 two-seat sports car on the runways. Last September, during an informal visit to this country,Prince Bernhard called at the de Havilland Hatfield airfield, where he piloted" a Vampire for 30 minutes and was alsoflown in the Comet by John Cunningham. Major Sonderman, personal pilot to the Prince, is well known for his brilliantdemonstration flying, both in this country and on the Continent. During the royal visit Prince Bernhard toured the Sperry Gyroscope Company's factory. He is seen here in company with Mr. Robert droadbent (left), director and general manager, and Mr. Arthur Hillier, O.B.E., chairman and managing director. They are watching the testing of gyro elements for the latest Gyrosyn cc.npass. FIRST SIDE-BY-SIDE-SEATER JET TRAINER : THE D.H. 115 Latest of the de Havilland Vampire line, previous members of which hove included fighters, fighter-bombers, deck-landing fighters and night ' fighters, is the D.H. 115 Vampire Trainer, a detailed description of which appeared in last week's issue of " Flight." This first air-to-air study brings out the clean nose-lines to particular advantage. The only directly comparable machines under construction are the Fokker S.I 4 and Fiat G.80.
