FLIGHT, 7 December 1950 TWOFOLD : As a result of recent test- flying, the Blackburn and General Aircraft Y.B.I anti-submarine prototype (Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba) has been fitted with extended wing-tips. The makers state that the increase in aspect ratio is beneficial in reducing induced drag in the single-engined cruising condition. The folding method is similar to that used on the Supermarine Seaftre. studies will be supplemented by practicalexercises at sea, employing surface ships, aircraft and submarines. American Rocketry A MARTIN Viking Naval rocket,launched from the White Sands proving ground, New Mexico, has setup a new single-stage altitude record, for American rockets, of 107 miles. An ex-German V-2, also launched from White Sands, exceeded this figure by sevenmiles. The two-stage rocket record— held by a Wac Corporal missile air-launched by a V-2—is 250 miles. Globemaster Overload Tests TEARING off successfully at a gross•*- weight of 194,5001b, the Douglas C-124A Globemaster recently exceededits designed gross weight by nearly 20,0001b. Its payload at the increasedweight is 50,0001b for a range of 2,500 miles. This production version of theGlobemaster was recently adapted as a paratroop-dropper by the provisionof two rear-fuselage doors in addition to the " clamshell" entry in the nose. As atrooper, the C-124A can carry 200 armed men. Avro Canada Resignation MR. WINNETT BOYD has resignedhis post as assistant chief engineer and chief designer. of the gas-turbinedivision of A. V. Roe, Canada, Ltd., in order to establish his own consultingpractice in Toronto.
