FLIGHT, 4 January 1951 HERE and THERE Venoms by Bristol DE HAVILLAND'S own production ofVenom intercepters is to be supple- mented by the Bristol Aeroplane Com-pany, which is undertaking Venom manu- facture at the request of the Ministry ofSupply. The Bristol company's aircraft division is also engaged on long-termdevelopment of guided missiles; and the engine division, it was recently an-nounced, is to build Rolls-Royce Avon turbojets to meet increased defence re-quirements. Employment in Bristol's Air- craft Division has been increaskig forsome time past, and the new programme will, of course, mean its maintenance at ahigh level. Hvdrofin Claims A RRIVING in New York, Mr. Christo-•£*- pher Hook, the British inventor of the Hydrofin airscrew-driven craft, statedthat the Admiralty had begun to take some interest in the anti-submarine pos-sibilities of the Hydrofin. " It cannot be torpedoed," said Mr. Hook. He claimeda speed of 50 m.p.h. and said that single- seater models would cost about £350. "Mel" Aircraft Lost A HALIFAX of the R.A.F., engaged on**• a meteorological flight and carrying a crew of eight, was seen by members ofthe crew of the Fleetwood trawler Flanders to crash into the sea about 15miles south-west of the island of Barra, in the Outer Hebrides, on December 29th.Wreckage was found and a B.E.A. Dakota, flying from Stornoway to Glas-gow, diverted to circle the area until re- lieved by an R.A.F. machine. Capt. A.Hadley, pilot of the Dakota, reported see- ing an R.A.F. dinghy half overturned. Ministry of Supply and Canuck and Orenda Production SIR ROY DOBSON, president of AvroCanada, has announced that the com- pany is going ahead immediately with new assembly lines for the CF-100 twin- jet heavy fighter and the Orenda axial- flow turbojet. "The Canuck," said Sir Roy, " is now recognized by the Royal Canadian Air Force as the front-line fighter for over-the-Pole warfare." The Orenda has been fully tested in the F-86 Sabre fighter and may later be used to power Canadian-built Sabres. Journalist Honoured AMONG the names in the New YearHonours List is that of Mr. R. W. Haddon, C.B.E., upon whom a knight-hood is conferred. Mr. Haddon is deputy chairman of Associated Iliffe Press (whosecontrol of 33 journals—among which is included Flight—makes it the largesttrade Press group in the world) and a director of various of its subsidiary com-panies. After com- pletion of their courses, said Mr. Har-rison, they will go to Japan, where the R.A.A.F. squadron to be re-equipped isbased.
