142 FLIGHT, 1 February 1951 A.T.C. BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS llie Duke of Gloucester Sees Exciting Contests at the Albert Hall NO comparable annual occasionattracts so many senior R.A.F.officers as do the A.T.C. Boxing Championship finals held at Albert Hall, and last Monday, January 22nd, H.R.H. the Duke of Gloucester also honoured theA.T.C. with his presence. There were some remarkably good bouts for him tosee. For the first time A.B.A. weight clas- sifications were used, and, therefore, someof the cups presented annually were trans- ferred to new categories for competition. Thus, the Flight Cup, won in 1950 by Cdt. R. Higgins, midget-weight (7 st) wasthis year contested by Cdt. E. Guntrip and Cdt. Cpl. J. Smith in Class C (11 st 11 lb).Smith was a decisive winner by a virtual knock-out, the referee stopping the fightin the second round. The results of the sixteen contestsbetween Northern and Southern champions are tabulated. Northernchampions were in the Red corner, Southern champions in the Blue. In eachcase the opponents had fought through Unit, Wing, Group, Inter-Group andNorthern and Southern area finals to get to the Albert Hall. Several noteworthy bouts occurred, andthe very first produced one of the best fights of the evening. Cdt. T. Christie(8 st) beat Cdt. M. Inwood on points, but Inwood was nevertheless judged the bestloser of the evening and thus received the Roy Limbert Cup from the Chief of theAir Staff for his performance. Despite his Cdt. R. Blackburn, 1701 (Johnstone) Squadron, gets one in during bis " best per- formance of the even- ing " bout with Cdt. E. O'Brien. Monahan (defeated by Higgins in the final for the Flight Cup last year) this time knocked out his opponent in the first round. He fought the second bout of the programme in Class B (8 st 7 lb). Everyone's sympathy (including that of his opponent, Cdt. B. Davis, it seemed) went out to Cdt. D. Mayer, who was un- lucky enough to be disqualified as the result of a rising blow judged to have landed low. A hard body-puncher, he had been an almost certain points winner. In the first Class C bout at 8 st, Cdt. S. Orr scored a very good points win over Cdt. J. Hemmings, and later Cdt. R. Jack- son (10 st), the only coloured competitor this year, beat Cdt. P. Wright on points. The evening ended with three spectacu- Bout Name of Winner Squadron* Name of Opponent Squadron Class B (Age 16- st Ib 17) 8 0 8 7 9 0 Cdt. T. The A. J. Elvin Cup for the best performance in the Championships was again won by Cdt. Cpl. R. Blackburn (10 st 8 Ib) of 1701 (Johnstone) Squadron. The Silver Wings trophies presented to the winning Southern and Northern Squadrons went to 1582 (Ardale) Squadron (Southern), and 1701 (John-: stone) Squadron (Northern). The final posi- tion of the Groups was as follows: No. 61 Group, 22 points,- No. 63, 20; No. 66, 16; Wales, 14; No. 64, 11; No. 67, 9; No. 65, 2; No. 62, nil. For the finals the winner receives three points for his Group and the loser one. In view of its size, the Welsh Group did par- ticularly well to gain 14 points. As usual on these occasions, musical selections were provided by the Central Band of the R.A.F., conducted by F/L. F. A. Gale, Director of Music. During the afternoon of January 22nd seven bouts ifl Class A (age group 15-16 years) were decided at the Metro- politan Police Gymnasium. Finalists in this class also re- ceived points towards the Inter- Squadron competition for the Harewood Trophy. The final for
