144 FLIGHT, 1 February 1951 FOR WESTERN DEFENCE : The attachment of two Dutch Naval squadrons to the Royal Navy is the latest instance of Western Union collective training. Seen on arrival last week at Eglington, Northern Ireland, is a Firefly of No. 4 Squadron, which is commanded by Lt. Cdr. Ledekerken (right). The other Netherlands unit, No. 860 Squadron (Sea Furies), is now operating from St. Merryn, Cornwall. SERVICE AVIATION-. RA.F. Station Syerston. The badges werepresented by Capt. Anthony Kimmins, OJJ.E., R.N. (ret.), who also took thesalute at a parade of RA.F. and Naval personnel. One of the qualifying pilotswas his own son, Midshipman Simon Kimmins; the others were Sub-Lt. (A)N. J. Cook and Midshipmen V. Leahy and P, J. Medcalf. Having reached wings standard inPrentices and Haryards, the four will re- ceive further training in deck-landing andspecialized fighter or anti-submarine tech- nique before their release. The Admiralty is prepared to award upto 160 commissions to National Service pilots and observers. Any-youth due forcall-up, and of a sufficient educational standard, may qualify for aircrew trainingwith the Navy by passing the required selection board and medical examinationthree months before call-up. On release after two years' service, N.S. aircrew arerequired to join the R.N.V.R. air squad- rons for a period of not less than fiveyears. A.S.T. to Train "Navigators F is announced that Air ServiceTraining, Ltd., is to undertake, at Hamble, the basic training of R.A.F.navigators. The first course for these officer cadets, drawn from NationalServicemen, is to start on February 7th, and numbers of Anson navigation trainersare being delivered to Hamble. The flying staff of pilots, navigation in-structors and signallers will consist of A.S.T. personnel, as will the aircraftmaintenance crews. A small number of R.A.F. officers, N.C.O.* and other rankswill be attached to the school for admini- strative duties and these, together withthe pupils, will be accommodated at A.S.T. There will be up to 80 cadetsunder training. Air Service Training, a member-company of the Hawker Siddeley Group, trained over 40,000 R.A.F. and Allied airforce personnel in every type of flying, RED INDIANS ARRIVE : The scene at Odiham recently, when the advance guard of No. 421 (Red Indian) Squadron, R.C.A.F., arrived by North Star to begin a 12- month period of training with Fighter Command. The'Squodron is being newly equipped with Vampire 5s. airfield control and aeronautical engineer-ing during the war. Since 1946, when A.S.T. was re-opened to civilians, somehundreds of students from 40 different countries have been passed out on thevarious courses.
