FLIGHT, 8 February 1951 The Davy's l¥ew Anti-submarine Aircraft r I 'HE formal announcement of an order placed by the -•- Ministry of Supply on behalf of the Admiralty for a "substantial number" of Fairey 17 carrier-borne anti- submarine aircraft is certainly one of the most welcome items of news released this year. Fears of a protracted production period are, to a large extent, allayed by the knowledge that the new Fairey patented system of envelope jigging will be utilized. Commensurate production of the Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba turboprop, round which the " 17 " was designed, is, of course, a prerequisite; but excellent reports of Mamba development in recent months leaves little ground for uneasiness on this score. Photographs on this page show one of the Fairey 17 prototypes during recent deck trials. It will be noted that wing "fences" have been installed slightly outboard of the second wing-folding point. The drawing at the head of the page illustrates a revised cockpit arrangement, likely to be adopted for production aircraft. The "17" is so far un-named. " Fleetwing," "Frigate" and "Fathomer" have obvious claims to consideration.
