9 MARCH 1951 OPERATION "AIR-BEEF" STATISTICS OF A SUCCESSFUL FIVE-MONTH'S CAMPAIGN Monorail conveyor carcases from th season in iilATTLil HOOrils" borne on t%'e nose of tlie "Bristol" Freighter which returned to Melbourne in September after a season's operation on the "Air- Beef" scheme tell the story of a five-months campaign that has given concrete shape to if years of hopeful planning. The vast distances and lack of surface transport facilities in Northern Australia have ham- strung development of the cattle industry, but air transport has given cattlemen new hope. An inland abattoir, from which beef is flown to the ports, has eliminated long overland cattle drives, with their inevitable losses in weight and quality. Flying over 80,000 miles, spending j88 hours in the air, am carrying more than 2,000,000 Ib. of beef, t, "Bristol" Freighter has not only established t, success of a scheme which can help to solve Northern Australia's population problems, but has proved that air transport holds the key to develop- ment of all areas where lack of surface transport facilities prevents exploitation of natural resources. 3?
