FLIGHT, 13 July 195 WEST AFRICAN WAYFARINGS . . . good cold lunch with cheerful service worthy of the stewards of B.O.A.C. Capt. Campbell sent Theo with a message to invite me to the flight-deck, so I sat in the first officer's seat while he went to the cabin for lunch. The noise on the Wayfarer's flight deck is very great, for the motors are only a few feet away, and we had to shout to make ourselves heard. We flew inland 100 miles from the coast over very dense forest, with hills of about 800 feet; from 5,500 feet there was no possible landing place within sight. Campbell assured me that if one engine failed we could reach a landing strip without pushing the other one too hard. As we passed into the Gold Coast I noted that in many villages the main streets resembled landing strips. I was told that many strips had in fact been built during the war and since abandoned, but villages had been built round them; other new villages had been built to the same pattern, so that a new fashion in town-planning has begun! We landed at Accra in humid heat, and I was most in- trigued to see dozens of lizards, about fifteen inches long, with orange heads, blue bodies, and red tails; and on their four legs they galloped like horses. Be it noted that I saw these before Mr. Almy of W.A.A.C. took me to the bar 13 the rest-house for one or two highballs, much appreciated after 9! hours of Wayfarer wanderings. The next day, as I was having breakfast at 0700 hr pre- paratory to making a broadcast, I heard on the B.B.C. news from London of the resignation of Aneurin Be van. At 1000 hr I took off in a Hermes, on the service to London, going as far as Lagos in ij hours. The skipper was Dicky Needham, and the excellent first steward "Danny Kaye" Taylorson, aptly nicknamed! A day or so later I flew on what is- called the "round the houses" first-class Dove service from Lagos to the Hausa country in the north. I reached Kano (after landing at Port Harcourt, Enugu, Makurdi, Jos, and Kaduna en route) and stayed with Mr. and Mrs. "Knocker" White; he was with the Instone Air Line in 1922. I had, incidentally, stayed in Lagos with Tom Munro of W.A.A.C., and I noted that the staff houses built for the Corporation are all of the same pleasant, roomy, cool design. After two days in Kano I came home by Hermes—from the heat of Kano to cold rain at London Airport in 14 hours. R.Ae.C. AVIATORS' CERTIFICATES BELOW is another of the periodical lists of those who havequalified for Royal Aero Club Aviators' Certificates, cover-ing the period from May 10th to June 25th, 1951.
