FLIGHT, 23 May 1952 the economics of AIRPORT RECORDING From the standards and recommended practices laid down by the Convention on International Aviation, it is evident that automatic recording for Air Traffic Control will sooner or later be expected at every airport. The problem of high costs has hitherto caused natural hesitation on the part of some airport authorities in implementing these requirements. In this series of advertisements, the answer to this problem is dealt with under the three headings of Capital Expenditure, Staff Requirements, Operating Costs. CAPITAL EXPENDITURE What are the considerations in reducing the hitherto high initial cost of Airport Recording equip ment ? They are three-fold. First, it is essential that the equipment should incorporate multi-channel recording. Second, the recording medium must be of a non-expendable material. Third, simplicity in design and a high degree of standardisation. The Thermionic Multi-Channel Airport Recorder developed by the T.P. Group has been designed to meet precisely these requirements. Thus, whilst completely fulfilling every requirement of Air Traffic Control, it reduces the cost of airport ^\7^ 7 recording to the lowest yet achieved. It will ^ ' monitor any number of channels up to a total of 14 on one magnetic recording tape — and for a period of up to 12 hours — without attention. The tape, which is virtually unbreakable can be used over and over again. The equipment is built up from a number of interchangeable units to suit the needs of airports or air traffic control centres of any size. Recordings can be played back any number of times without loss of quality. When no longer required they can be immediately erased on a separate demagnetiser unit — separate to ensure security. The tape is then ready for immediate re-use without further processing. Full details of this latest develop ment in low-cost airport recording equipment will be supplied gladly on request.
