PLIGHT, 30 May 1952 Flight " copyright drawings Valiant (1st prototype) PLANS OF ATTACK flTH emphasis being increasingly placed upon quality rather than upon quantity, the development of the bomber can be fairly said to have reached the point where both time and money prevent any nation from maintaining a large force of up-to-date offensive aircraft. As a corollary, it follows that the aircraft placed in production—albeit limited production— must be of the highest possible standard. Of the four aircraft shown here, the Canberra is in production in Great Britain, Australia and the U.S.A., and is in service with the Royal Air Force. The Valiant is undergoing intensive development and is going into production for the R.A.F. with a "super priority." The big Boeing—probably the most, expensive aircraft ever built—is likely to be built in numbers at Seattle and, possibly, at the Fort Worth plant now used by Convair for the B-36. But the even bigger YB-60 may also be ordered, in which case production at Fort Worth would remain with Convair. What ever the future may bring—and it will certainly bring even stranger-looking bombers—these aircraft are sure of a most important place in the offensive strength of the Western nations.
