The principal interest in this is military at the present time, although for test and demonstration purposes civil aircraft such as the Comet are being employed. The Chipmunk (Gipsy Major 14c h.p.) is probably the world's best elementary trainer. It is in full production for the R.A.F., the R.A.F.V.R. and export. Development of the Comet continues towards the Series 2 fitted with Rolls-Royce Avon engines, these giving at present 4 x 6,500 lb., 4 x 2950 kg. The prototype has been undergoing intensive flight test since Februarv 16, 1952. Because of the urgency of the work this aircraft is unlikely to be present at this year's display, but production deliveries to B.O.A.C. will start in about twelve months' time. Trials are proceeding well ; more than a hundred hours were flown in the first four months. Briefly, the Series 2, which is 3 ft. longer than the Series 1, will have a capacity payload of 13,500 lb., 6130 kg., with 44 passengers. It will carry that load on stages up to 2,500 statute miles,
