29 August 1952 141 (Hosier Meteors ADDITIONAL to the A.W. Meteor N.F.n night fighter, to which allusion has been made, the range of Meteors includes the dual-control T.7, for training in high-speed flight and aerobatics; the F.8 single-seater—primarily an inter- cepter, but with provision for eight rocket projectiles under each wing; the fighter/reconnaissance F.R.9, with full fighter armament (4 x 20 mm guns) and camera equipment for tactical reconnaissance; the unarmed, long-span P.R.10, for high-altitude reconnaissance; and the private-venture ground-attack Meteor—a strengthened version with pro vision for four 1,coo-lb bombs or twenty-four 96-lb rocket projectiles in addition to the 4 x 20 mm gun armament. All are Derwent-powered. With four 1,000-lb bombs, the P.V. turns the scales at 22,000 lb; this is nearly double the weight of the Meteor F.i—the first Allied jet fighter in action. tster Javelin most important of all—in development potential, this massive delta-wing, multi-purpose, Sapphire-powered fighter, now in super-priority production for the R.A.F., is certainly one of the most remarkable of present-day military aircraft. Some comments by the makers' chief test pilot merit repetition. He states that the most ordinary things about the Javelin (formerly G.A.5) are its flying and handling characteristics, which "vary but little from those of any con ventional old-type plank-wing aircraft." Being designed for all-weather day and night operations, and carrying large amounts of equipment, the new fighter is relatively heavy, but it is reported to have a climb and speed equal, or superior, to current plank- and swept-wing single-seaters and—due to its very low wing loading (which also confers remarkably low landing and take-off speeds)—an unusually high degree of manoeuvra bility at low A.S.I.S, at all altitudes.
