242 FLIGHT BRITISH AIRCRAFT 1952 military Power plant Span Length Height Wing area 4 Bristol Hercules 113ft 82ft tin 22ft 6in 1,408 sq ft Handley M*age Hastings VARIANTS of this military transport—the standard type of its class in R.A.F. service—are the marks C.i, Met. 1, C.2, C.3 and C.4. There is, additionally, an experimental Sapphire-powered version, to which reference is made later. The C. 1 was the original production type, with four Bristol Hercules 101 engines and a gross weight of 75,000 lb. The Met. 1 is similar in structure and power plant, but, as its designation implies, is equipped for long-range meteorological reconnaissance. The C.2 is an improved version with a lowered tailplane of increased area, spring-tab elevators, Hercules 106 engines, extra tankage and other refinements. The all-up weight has been increased to 80,000 lb and the maximum payload is well over 20,000 lb. The C.3 has been developed for the Royal New Zealand Air Force and is characterized by Hercules 737 engines, and the C.4 is a special "V.I.P." model adapted from the C.2. The C.i, C.2 and C.3 function in the roles of freighter, paratrooper, ambulance, troop carrier, supply-dropper or glider tug. Hawker Sea Hawk A NUMBER of Sea Hawk F.i deck- landing fighters have now left the Hawker production line and the formation of the first Naval Aviation squadron is imminent. The production version differs in certain details from the prototypes already demonstrated; the span, for instance, is slightly greater and the cockpit canopy has been modified. Alone among the world's Service-type fighters, the Sea Hawk has twin tail pipes for its Rolls-Royce Nene turbojet. The intakes are in the wing-root leading edges, and it is claimed that the "bifurcated trunk" arrangement greatly reduces the frictional losses associated with the more usual long intake and outlet systems, and at the same time affords valuable space for equipment fore and aft of the power unit. Those who have witnessed demonstrations by the Sea Hawk in previous displays will be aware that the noise level is remarkably low, and that manoeuvrability is of a very high order indeed.
