Sof VickerS'Supermarine Swift PREVENTED from de monstrating in the pre vious Display at Farnborough, the Swift F.i super-priority intercepter is expected to put up a dramatic performance next week. An earnest of this was its night from London to Brussels on July 10th this year at an average speed of 665.9 m.p.h. Powered by a single Rolls-Royce Avon, the Swift has provision for an afterburner in its capacious rear fuselage. Air is delivered to the Avon from so-called elephant-ear intakes, which flank the fuselage forward of the wing leading edge, in way of the cockpit enclosure—a characteristic Supermarine design feature first manifest on the Attacker and perpetuated on the Types 510 and 535. The 510, it is opportune to remark, has a tail-down undercarriage and in "navalized" form has been successfully landed aboard an aircraft carrier. Its successor, the 535, resembles the present Swift in most essentials, but, like the Attacker and 510, is Nene-powered. Yirkertt-Stiiternnirine SOS THIS is a Naval fighter of most striking appearance and tremendous power, and not the least of its numerous remarkable features is the very thin straight wing. Having regard to the development "stretch" inherent in the Supermarine single-jet fighters, however, jt is not to be supposed that a swept wing might not be substituted should this be deemed necessary in the interests of speed. The leading edge of the present wing carries "droop-snoot" flaps, which work in conjunction with trailing-edge flaps to ensure a moderate landing speed. The 508 also has the distinction of being the only fighter with a "butterfly" tail— i.e., the tailplane and elevator assemblies have a very sharp dihedral angle and there are no vertical surfaces. Photographs suggest, that in the process of varying tail incidence the entire rear portion of the fuselage is moved over a limited arc. Being powered with two Rolls-Royce Avons, the 508 has a phenomenal rate of climb, and also impressed at Farn borough last year with its high rate of roll. The four gun ports, beneath the air intakes, are of abnormal size.
