Flight, 29 August 1952 Advert ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY SAPPHIRE JET BREAKS FOUR WORLD RECORDS World's highest powered type-tested jet engine proves itself by setting new climb records. Until it has proved itself in the sky, a jet engine is in fact no more than a scientific experiment. That is the significance behind the famous time-to-altitude flights in which the Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire set four new world records and proved itself a jet engine worthv and fit to power the most modern and precious airframe. Now type-tested at 8,300 lbs. static thrust, 27% greater than anything previously achieved in aviation history, the Sapphire is a flight-proven triumph for Armstrong Siddeley engineers and production men. Already it powers the sensational new Gloster GA 5, world's first twin jet Delta fighter on super priority order for the R.A.F. and is manufactured in America for the Canberra bomber and Thunderjet fighter. With the Mamba Turbo-prop also given super priority, Armstrong Siddeley is now making two of the only three gas turbine engines given this status. DOUBLE MAMBA Turbo-prop, delivering 2950 equivalent shaft horse power, is on super priority order to power Royal Navy's Gannet carrier-borne anti-submarine aircraft. DESPITE MIGHTY OUTPUT, Sapphire has compactness which simplifies design and installation. Here mechanics strip down Sapphire for inspection after record-making flight.
