Bristol Itiihiimi Bristol §70 THREE new versions of the Britannia have been announced since the prototype made its first flight a year ago—all larger and more powerful than the Mk 100 now in production. Employing the Proteus 750 of 4,150 e.h.p. instead of the Proteus 705 (3,780 e.h.p.), the new Britannias are the Mk 200 Freighter, the Mk 250 passenger/freighter and the Mk 300 air liner. All have a 10ft 3in fuselage extension, and will thus offer a better capacity payload than the already attractive Mk 100—30,000 lb, compared with 25,000 lb. With its full fuel load of 6,800 gal, the Britannia 300 will carry almost 10 tons for 3,940 miles, and its range with full payload is no less than 5,100 miles. Maximum cruising speed is 389 m.p.h. The economy of the Britannia and its ability to cover long routes with fewer inter mediate stops are claimed to give this graceful turboprop airliner an operational advantage over pure-jet rivals. Its seating capacity varies from 60-104, according to layout. B.O.A.C. have ordered 26 Britannias (includ ing ten Mk 300s), and are negotiating for ten more—both Mk 200s and 250s; six lengthened Britannias will be delivered to Qantas in 1956-7, and several other orders are under discussion. The forthcoming delivery of three Mk 31s to Trans-Canada Air Lines will enable the com pany to carry new classes of cargo at economical rates. The Freighter's ability to handle bulky loads is accompanied by an excellent small-field performance: carrying a payload of nearly six tons, the Mk 31 clears 50ft in just over 800 yd. Two 2,000 h.p. Bristol Hercules give a maximum cruising speed of 192 m.p.hu The A.N.A. "Air Beef' scheme and the Silver City Airways vehicle ferry are two of the best-known freighting projects which this aircraft has made possible. Six Mk 32 Superf reighters (as illustrated), with performance similar to the standard version but with cargo space increased from 2,360 to 3,000 cu ft, are in service with the latter company. Other operators take advantage of the Type 170's passenger-carrying abilities; West African Airways, for example, use a high-density model seating no less than 56 people. Several air forces and governments also use the Freighter. Power plant .. x Bristol Hercules 734 Span . . . .. .. 108ft Length 68ft 4in Gross weight 44,000 lb Max. cruising speed . . 192 m.p.h.
