De HavWand Comet 2 and 3 TEN major airlines have so far placed orders for these later versions of the Comet, which have longer fuselages to take advantage of the greatly increased performance stemming from the installation of four Rolls-Royce Avon turbojets. Increased fuel capacity, coupled with lower consumption, will give the new Comets more competitive range than the pioneering Ghost versions. Production of the Comet 2, 3ft longer than the Series 1 and capable of carrying 44 passengers on stage-lengths exceeding 2,000 miles, is under way at Hatfield, Belfast and Chester; the first of 12 for B.O.A.C. has already been completed. Other companies with Comet 2s on order include Air France, U.A.T., B.C.P.A., Japan Air Lines, L.A.V. and Panair do Brasil. The theme of Comet development is the improvement of range and payload rather than speed, and the intended cruising speed for both the new versions falls comfortably short of the critical drag-rise speed (some 540 m.p.h.) for the basic Comet airframe. Further lengthened by 15ft is the Ccmet 3 (on order for B.O.A.C. and P.A.W.A.), a 58/76-seater for stage leagths of up to 2,600 miles. Some 450 have been built, making this attractive twin the most numerous of Britain's post war transport types. Many are used for executive travel in the United States, where the makers have established a special distribution and after- sales service. The current standard version, the Series 5, is powered by two 380 h.p. Gipsy Queen 70 Mk 2 geared and supercharged engines, and has accommodation ioi up to 11 passengers. With these engines, more powerful than those of earlier versions, the all-up weight is increased from 8,500 to 8,800 lb. The take-off performance is lively; under I.C.A.N. conditions the Dove 5 clears 50 ft in 770 yd. With a 1,684 lb payload it will cruise for 500 miles at 179 m.p.h. The Dove can be used not only as a miniature airliner, but also for training, crop-spraying and survey. A military version, the Devon, is also serving in large numbers with the R.A.F. and several overseas air forces at home and abroad, both as a transport and as a radio or navigational trainer.
