Handley Page Transports WHEN the Handley Page project for a 150-seat, 600-m.p.h. airliner was announced last year, details of the wing design were not disclosed. Since then the company's Victor bomber has been revealed, and it is reasonable to assume that the new airliner, designated H.P.97, will employ the distinctive crescent plan-form of its military predecessor. The fuselage will be of double-bubble section, with two decks and capacity for 96-150 seats, depending on the standard of comfort offered. On the North Atlantic route, say the makers, the H.P.97 would operate at a direct cost of Id per passenger mile, covering the 3,450 miles between New York and London twice in a day. Another important project is reported to be on the Handley Page drawing-board: a four-engined, high-wing airliner designed to replace the Dakota. Of this aircraft, said to resemble a larger Marathon with Alvis radial engines, no details have been officially released. The Hermes (below), as operated by B.O.A.C. and Airwork, is a comfortable 40/56-seat transport capable of flying nearly 2,900 miles at 267 m.p.h. with a 6,350 lb payload. Hastings C Mk 1 is the original Royal Air Force transport version, powered with Bristol Hercules 101 engines. A structurally similar machine is the Met. 1, equipped for long-range meteorological recon naissance, but the C.2 differs in airframe and power plant. The engines are Hercules 106s and the tailplane has been lowered to the centre-line of the fuselage and increased in area. Extra fuel tankage and spring tabs on the elevators are additional refinements. The Hastings C.3 was developed for the Royal New Zealand Air Force and uses Hercules 737 engines with single-stage superchargers. Otherwise it is essentially similar to the C.2. The C.4 is'a special V.I.P. version with de luxe accommodation for four personages and their staff. Four of these machines are being operated by the R.A.F. The Hastings C.2 accommo dates 30 paratroops with supplies, 50 fully equipped troops, 32 stretcher cases and 28 sitting wounded, or any of several combinations of freight loads.
