BRITISH KIRCRAFT 1953 AERODYNAMICALLY one of the cleanest large aircraft yet to fly, the Valiant nevertheless has a wing of generous area and this is a major factor contributing to its reputedly exceptional performance at great altitudes. The lines of the fuselage are broken only by a highly stream lined cockpit enclosure and a small bulge beneath the forward portion. Mainplanes and tail surfaces are moderately swept and the former have boundary-layer fences. In their root sections are housed two pairs of Rolls-Royce Avon turbojets, aspirated through leading-edge intakes, each intake serving one pair of engines. The main wheels of the undercarriage are paired in tandem and retract sideways into recesses in the wing; the double-slotted flaps are of very large area and are in six sections. At the moment of writing the only version of the Valiant to which reference is officially allowed is the B.1 bomber, but it is clear that the aircraft has a development potential for a variety of applications. Performance in the New Zealand Air Race will be watched with the keenest interest. MHnHHI VicherS'Armstrongs tOOO and V.C.7 IN January of this year Vickers-Armstrongs, Ltd., announced that they had been authorized to start work on a new jet-propelled military transport known as the Vickers 1000. Very little can be said of this most interesting aircraft beyond what can be gathered from the photograph, but it is known that the intended power plant is four Rolls-Royce Conway by-pass units, which reconcile very high thrust with unusual fuel economy. The general pattern of the Vickers 1000 follows that of the Valiant bomber, though the span has been extended and the wing-tip form revised. Concurrently with the Vickers 1000, work is in hand on a civil project of similar type, designated V.C.7 and capable of operating on very long trans-oceanic routes or over relatively short distances—in die latter case with up to 150 passengers. An American report avers that the international version will operate at a weight of 222,000 lb, whereas, the "domestic" model will have an all-up weight of 180,000 lb. xternally, the V.C.7 will be almost identical to the Vickers 1000.
