<v>b: SUngsby T-21B Sell berg h THE T-21B is one of two dual-training gliders produced by Slingsby Sailplanes, Ltd., and put into service with the A.T.C. and civilian gliding clubs. Designed specifically for their use, the T-21B offers the advantages of a dual ab initio trainer as well as having a good performance. The side-by-side cockpit has been arranged so that all controls are ready to the hands of both pilots, and visibility is good; small individual wind-shields give the cover necessary during aero-tow. The forward portion of the fuselage is of plywood stressed skin construction; the rearward diagonally braced and fabric covered. The wing is of the plywood-covered, single-spar, torsion-resisting nose-box type, the section aft of the spar being fabric covered; a single strut braces the wing from the main spar to the fuselage. A well in the floor of the cock pit allows instructor or pupil to rest his feet while not flying the aircraft. Lift spoilers are fitted. Span is 54ft and wing area 260 sq ft. Stingsby Kir by Tutor THIS single-seat intermediate glider is very manoeuvrable and is capable of good soaring performance. Its high reserve strength factor, particularly in the wing, is a great advantage for training purposes. The type was developed from the Kirby Cadet by the redesign of the wing to give a higher aspect-ratio and by the use of a differential mechanism in the aileron control circuit. Many Tutor parts are interchangeable with those of the Cadet, which is itself seeing widespread service with the R.A.F. The latest type Tutor II is fitted with a parachute box behind the pilot's seat and is, therefore, suitable for aero-tow and cross-country flying. The type is, in fact, equivalent to the Grunau Baby II, but has the advantages of lower cost, great strength and considerable spares backing from Cadet and Tutor stocks. Span is 43ft 3!in, and length 20ft lOin; tare weight is 340 lb. Slhtgsby T.S1 Tandem Tutor KNOWN in the R.A.F. as the Cadet 3, this is a dual-control glider for elementary instruction. The introduction of dual control has already shown good results both in safety and improved standard of training, and instructors no longer tend to remain on the ground as they did in the days of single-seat basic trainers. The Tandem Tutor was developed from the single-seat Kirby Tutor, and the wings and tail unit of the latter, having a high reserve strength factor, have been utilized for the Tandem verson. Skids, wheel, seats and many other structural mem bers are interchangeable between the two types, thus reducing the price of the Tandem Tutor. An A.S.I, and a sensitive altimeter are fitted for the instructor in the rear cockpit. Two hooks, one for aero-tow and one for winch launching are fitted, and 5-to-6 minute instructional flights in still air from a winch launch are possible. A Tutor fuselage and wing struts can be fitted to Tandem Tutor wings to convert it into a single-seat glider. Span is 43ft 3fin, wing area 170 sq ft, tare weight 389 lb.
