700 FLIGHT, 28 May 1954 Cody's "Flyer" NEW PICTURES 44 YEARS OLD! THESE photographs, which should be of great interest to students of aeronautical history, are remarkable by reason of the fact that they have never pre viously been published. They were taken at Laffan's Plain, Farnborough, by Dr. A. P. Thurston, M.B.E., D.Sc., F.R.Ae.S. (who is still an avia tion enthusiast at the age of 73), but it was not until a few weeks ago that he had the negatives printed for the first time. The pictures—Dr. Thurston is not certain of their date, but examination of various other photographs suggest it to be 1910 —show the Cody biplane, which its builder was constantly modi fying, at a time when it had a 65 h.p. E.N.V. engine driving a single airscrew. The front hori zontal surface served both as elevator and—used differen tially, as seen in the head-on view—as ailerons. Inter-plane ailerons were also employed. To demonstrate stability, Cody once flew with a man standing half way along the port lower wing.
