H.M. CARRIERS 1955 . . . 422 FLIGHT, 1 April 1955 H.M.A.S. SYDNEY Displacement 19,550 tons Length 695ft Seam 80ft Complement 1,350 Aircraft capacity 34 JVU - J*»35.~ ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY THERE ARE at present two light fleet carriers in service with theRoyal Australian Navy, H.M.A.S. Sydney (operational) and H.M.A.S. Vengeance (training). Sydney (ex-Terrible) was com-pleted and entered R.A.N. service in 1949, while Vengeance is on loan from the British Government until shortly before the arrivalof Melbourne (ex-Majestic), which has been constructed in this country and is now undergoing contractors' trials. Melbourneis expected to commission in October of this year, and—fitted with a six-degree angled deck and steam catapult—will thenbecome the R.A.N. operational carrier, the role of training carrier being taken over by Sydney. The modification of Sydney to modem standards (includingangled deck and steam catapult) will probably be carried out after the arrival of Melbourne in Australia. During 1955 two R.A.N.anti-submarine squadrons will be re-equipped with Gannets and a fighter squadron with Sea Venom 53s. The present strength ofAustralia's Navy is five front-line and two second-line squadrons. ROYAL CANADIAN NAVY ON LOAN from the Royal Navy, Magnificent (laid down in July1943 and completed in April 1948) is Canada's only aircraft carrier in service at present. Arrangements were made in 1952 for thepurchase by Canada of a sister-ship, Powerful, work on which bad been suspended in May 1946. Following the resumption ofconstruction in July 1952, plans were revised to provide for a completely modern carrier: flight deck and lifts have beenstrengthened, an eight-degree angled deck and improved arrester gear are being incorporated, and the ship will have the steam-typecatapult. Re-named Bonaventure, the new carrier is due to be completed in October next year, after which she will replaceMagnificent. The Canadian Naval Air Squadrons, previously operating SeaFuries, Avengers and Fireflies, are now being equipped with American-built McDonnell Banshee fighters and Piasecki HUPhelicopters, and Grumman CS2F anti-submarine search/strike aircraft built under licence by the Canadian de Havilland company.
