640 FLIGHT Gloster Meteor F.8 (Israeli A.F.). North American Harvard's (Israeli A.F.). North American F-51 Mustang (Israeli A.F.). THE WORLD'S AIR FORCES ... component of the Defence Forces and is administered by theDepartment of Defence, located at Parkgate Street, Dublin. First-line units comprise a service unit, at Gormanston, Co.Meath, and a general purpose unit, responsible for reconnais- sance, photography, target-towing and communications, atBaldonnel, Co. Dublin. The flying training school is at Bal- donnel, and there, too, is an apprentice training school, an de Havilland Vampires (Italian A.F.). Vickers-Supermorine Spitfires (Israeli A.F.). Air Corps depot, and a maintenance unit. No difficulty isexperienced in maintaining the Corps at full establishment on a voluntary enlistment basis. Present strength is about 90 officersand 820 other ranks. The service unit is equipped with Super- marine Seafires, the general purpose unit with D.H. Doves.Avro Anson XIXs and Miles Martinets, and for training there are D.H. Chipmunks, Hunting Percival Provosts and Spitfire9s. Officer Commanding, The Air Corps, is Col. P. Quinn, with headquarters at Baldonnel. ISRAEL The Israel Defence Forces/Air Force THIS TITLE is the official style of Israel's Air Force, for itis a component arm of the Israel Defence Forces. It consists of various field/air units, and a headquarters, the latter function-ing both as an H.Q. of units in the field and as a component of the General Staff of the I.D.F. The I.D.F./A.F. is organizedin several fighter, fighter/bomber and transport squadrons, all stationed at operational bases and supported by maintenancebases, depots and training bases. The squadrons and their servicing units are trained to a high degree of mobility and, incase of emergency, the bases can accommodate squadrons operating different types of aircraft. They can, at the same time,send small servicing units to reactivate and maintain stand-by airfields and unused landing grounds. Operational tasks are: (1) attainment of air superiority overpotential aggressors; (2) co-operation with the ground and naval forces of the I.D.F. Standard fighters are the Gloster Meteor F.8,North American Mustang and Supermarine Spitfire. It was recently disclosed that an order has been placed for 15 MarcelDassault Mystere II jet fighters. Standard bombers are the Boeing B-17 and D.H. Mosquito, and Douglas C-47s andCurtiss C-46s serve for transport. In the light reconnaissance class are the Piper Cub and Fokker S-ll. Trainers are theBoeing PT-17 Kaydet, North American Harvard, Avro Anson and Airspeed Consul. The aim of the Force is to attain a high pitch of operationalefficiency through continual training of air and ground crews, and by the purchase of the most modern equipment available.Principal commanders: A.O.C. Yehuda Rabim. -V-- ITALY "• The Italian Air Force THE UNITS of this Force are grouped under the followingheadings, according to their tasks: operational; units for train- ing flying personnel "who are not on the strength of any flyingunit"; special task units; flying schools; and air/sea rescue centres. The operational formations are land/air warfare unitsand the Air Defence Command (Commando Generate D.A.T.), the latter responsible for control and reporting, the intercepterfighter units, the anti-aircraft artillery, both of the Army and Navy. The transport units include two or three squadrons ofFairchild C-119s, and the anti-submarine units are equipped Fiat G.80-1B prototype (Italian A.F.).
